You are trying to redefine or dilute the definition of the "Karen" type. The original Karen's were those who smugly strutted around enforcing rules selectively upon minorities (or against anyone) while exaggerating their own supposed vulnerability. Like the woman who made the scene because the black family was polluting the air by using charcoal in their grill at the park instead of a propane tank (which the city codes demanded).

It’s hard to tell which one should be accused of being a “Karen”. Clearly, there are some elements of each that are incorrectly assessed.

• In a free America, with privately owned businesses, the owner of the business should have the right to refuse to serve anybody for any reason. If they wrongly discriminate without breaking the law, they should suffer the consequences of losing business (in normal times in a capitalist America). However, if they are being denied “necessary” supplies or services that are only available at that location despite ADA exemption and Hipaa, there could be a case. Ideally, the owner would have their “mask” requirements prominently displayed and would privately and respectfully approach the patron/customer that appeared not to be complying. When the exemption was respectfully referenced, the owner could then allow or disallow and ask the customer to shop elsewhere. The patron should then leave and shop elsewhere if elsewhere that provides for their needs exists.

It appears that the person compiling these videos must have been accused of being a Karen or wants to upend the stigma for being a self appointed police of the edicts of the fear-mongers.

Those who try to enforce silly edicts ( usually through self righteous intimidation), because they believe the fake reasoning given for the edicts of the tyrants: these are the Karens, not the business owners or the people who aren’t quivering behind a mask or a under a bike helmet.

I don’t mean to condone the threatening tone of the young tough guy that told the old guy in the vehicle to move on. That is the reason the older guy got out of the vehicle to prove he wasn’t going to be intimidated. In years past if the younger guy wasn’t causing (or almost causing) an accident, an older guy may have tried to respectfully give the young guy a little safety advice and the younger guy may have said, “thanks, but I’m fine without the protective gear and going the speed I’m going.” That would have been the end of the exchange.

Maybe it’s time to go back to treating others the way we want to be treated. Ignorance is everybody’s right. If I don’t like what that guy is doing and he doesn’t want to change, I can usually choose my company or put up with the inconvenience for a short period of time. If the majority have lost their minds, that makes it tougher, but you still get more flies with honey.

I’ve found that when I go into a business where most people are wearing masks, most don’t say anything to me because I’m usually smiling at them when I make eye contact with them. Many with masks will even talk to me (when I am without a mask), just because I’m the only one around with a smile and looking friendly.
