Better? Health care? With politicians that have not the ability or the conscience to keep their hands out of the till? Do you seriously think they can’t screw that up? You actually trust them to leave a big pile of money alone?? It worked so well for SS.

So long as "demanding better" constitutes destroying the middle class and creating a two-class system, can you really say it's better?

Make no mistake, the places you've cited, the major difference between the US and them is A) much high taxes to the middle classes (where the AVERAGE marginal national tax rates is - IIRC - 58%), not to mention a VAT on purchased goods; and B) lower quality of services overall. There is a reason why the people in Canada who can afford it come across the border to have procedures done in the US.

So what are we really saying here?

Dramatically increase the quality of life of the lower class
Dramatically lower the quality of life of the middle class and lower upper class (since they'll be the ones most impacted by footing the bill)
The 1% continue on largely unaffected, since an increased tax bill to them barely puts a dent in their wealth, particularly with the number of tax shelter strategies available to them.

And if that's what we're saying, what's the motivation for people to bust their tails trying to make a better life for themselves? The gap between the two classes will be nigh insurmountable, and the difference in quality of life between middle and lower class will largely disappear. Is that worth 6+ years of higher education? Is that worth working seven days a week, most weeks? Sure, it's pretty awesome for the people on the low end that have no marketable skills or the inclination to acquire any, but is that the mindset we want to incentivize?
