God gave the Moses 10 basic commandments (laws) which Israel's religious leaders turned into over 600. There is a tendency to see something good and expand on it until it is unrecognizable.
Most of our valuable laws were based upon the 10 commandments, (e.g. don't kill, don't covet, love your neighbor as yourself, etc...). Now that we have banned the 10 commandments and any reference to God, what's left is just a cheap copy.

Check your commandments the first 4 are just about worship me worship me worship me

Since you pointed out the first four commandments, I'll be glad to comment on that issue. I believe even those commandments are critical to a successful society.

  1. YOU SHALL HAVE NO OTHER GODS BEFORE ME.
  2. YOU SHALL NOT MAKE IDLES TO WORSHIP
  3. YOU SHALL NOT TAKE THE NAME OF THE LORD YOUR GOD IN VAIN
  4. REMEMBER THE SABBATH DAY AND KEEP IT HOLY (SEPARATED)

Many horrendous acts (terrorism, killings, etc...) is done in the name of many gods. Molech (Canaanite god of the harvest) required the babies of the people to be sacrificed (burned to death) in order to enrich themselves (have good harvests). Allah requires his follower to kill those who refuse to convert (check the quran if you don't believe it). Even so called benevolent gods turn us away from God's plan for our salvation.
Much of the vice in the world comes because people worship money, power, self, etc... instead of God. We make our TV, our house, our yacht, our vacation home, etc... so important that we lose sight of the God who made us for a purpose
We use the name of the Lord our God to justify the evils we do to others. (Christian Crusades competed with the horrendous acts of Islam).
God gave us work as a gift, not a punishment (what did Adam and Eve do before they were evicted from Eden). Even a good thing can turn into an idle. The balance he commanded us requires that we dedicate one day to rest and to recenter our lives around Him. When we don that it effects how we see the world, the issues, the people around us. It helps us to treat others in a way that would honor God.

These commandments were not to address a single sin; they were to address the root of all sin. They were listed first to help set up the framework for everything we do.

The 5th commandment is similar on a smaller scale and it is the only one He lists with a promise attached. YOU SHALL HONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER. This commandment allows us to see the whole world on a smaller scale. It teaches not only respect for our parents, but for the wisdom of previous generations. It places a great responsibility on the parents to be worthy of that respect/honor (but doesn't free the child of the responsibility if they don't think their parents warrant respect). This attitude that is taught to the children (who become parents some day and should pass it on), sets the children up to be productive, successful members of society. The promise is THAT IT MAY GO WELL WITH THEM AND THEY MAY LIVE LONG ON THE EARTH.

This response is already too long, but if you want to discuss further...

I'm all for repealing obsolete laws , apparently its still illegal in my hometown (Huddersfield) to beat a carpet on Sunday , why is this still on the books and who still does that anyway

I generally don't beat my carpets until Monday or later.

I'm more along the lines that all legislation should have a maximum ten year expiration date, and after the first renewal require a 2/3 vote for subsequent renewals.
