On November 22 1963 I was nine years old and a less than brilliant, often rowdy, always passionate student at St. Anthony's in Baltimore. For us Irish Catholics John F. Kemnedy was 'Our' president. My father once said "We would vote for the Kennedy's dog if they run it." The events of that weekend are forever etched in my mind. We spent the entire weekend glued to our small black and white TV unwilling to miss a moment of the emotion and unfolding drama. Through the tragic events in Dallas, JFK was elevated from 'Our ' president to a national martyr. We were up lifted by the pagentry of the state funeral and were brought together as one people as we offered up the President to the ages. In many ways it was the defining moment of my youth.

Hello. May I ask what it is like for an American person to live in Korea? Was it difficult to start with to adapt yourself to their way of living and thinking?

Hi Naomi,
Thanks for asking. I wrote this for someone else but it might answer your question.

She asked me how I ended up in Korea.

I'm not sure there is a short answer.

I read too many books about adventure and foreign lands when I was a kid.

I wanted to lead a life of adventure.

I would not be happy to live my life in suburban America.

I wanted to run away to sea, to fight on foreign shores, and live with exotic people.

When I first came to Korea I was excited and stimulated by everything and person that I met.

All things were new and different.

I viewed everything through the lense of my own, white bread, American self.

It made me feel alive like standing at the wheel of a small boat slamming into the waves as I headed out to sea.

Like a mariner with one hand on the wheel and the other gripping the rail, ball cap on my head turned backward, master of my own fate but just barely.

Sometimes I become exhausted and so I sleep and get up and start again.

Interesting. Thank you, Mpdowney.
