It's sad. I came here for community, for like minded people who were ideally rational and mature and wanted to discuss things in a rational, mature manner. But instead, as usual, the angry tribal monkey behavior that inevitably ensues is arising when people disagree on anything. If America does eventually crumble, it will be in no small part due to the likes of an uncomfortably large number of people on here and "on the right side of history" (in their own minds anyway) being too busy being fractious and argumentative, unreasonable and unapproachable to provide a united front when we need it. Rather like the Celts, who were too busy bickering amongst themselves to present a unified tribal front when the Romans came marching through their territories. The Romans eventually and quickly overcame their superstitious awe and terror involving the Celts, and stomped them into the ground. Mostly because the Celts were too busy being divided by their own shortsightedness and inability to cooperate and effectively organize in the face of a clear and present danger to them all.

Long story short, most of the time all I see on here is what I'd see on any social media site. That is, people launching into arguments and tirades and hating each other for disagreeing, and worst of all...I'm starting to fall into that. I went on a drama free diet when I got divorced 12 years ago, I like to say, but yet here I am getting sucked into it anyway. I hate it. I also can tell that this site has been infiltrated by a number of leftist trolls--not naming anybody, but I'm sure most of you know who I mean--who live to do what their kind do best; sow discord and division, and insulting people who make valid points, and I refuse to engage with that lot any longer. There is no arguing with fanatics. That and the idjits on here constantly telling people to "WAKE UP" whenever they are confronted with people who disagree with them. They're the sleepwalkers, really, IMO anyway.

To that end, I will leave this up for 24 hours and then I will delete my account from this site. I've had enough of the drama. I'm sure the usual suspects will be crowing about how I'm such a coward who can't stand behind his words and I could not care less about what they have to say. If they take joy in saying such things, they are not people I want anything to do with. To those on here I've had positive and productive interactions with, y'all are good folks, and it's been good talking with you all. But it's time for me to move on. In the immortal words, excelsior!

We are at war for the soul of this country. I remember being part of the Democrat Party when I was young and idealistic. What that party has become is unrecognizable to me. Being liberal has now become being a radical, attacking the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. I don't know who should be credited for this comment but it bears stating, " If you are not liberal as a young person you have no heart. If you are over 40 and still liberal you have no brain." For clarity, the term liberal has been hijacked by radicals and would not be recognized by great liberals from our past such as John F. Kennedy. Remember the famous words from his inauguration? "Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country." The current Left has this flipped favoring, "Ask me not what I can do for my country, ask what can my country take from someone else and give to me."

The current "Leadership" in the Legislature (Article 1) and I use the word very loosely is controlled by life long politicians that have forgotten their oaths in favor of personal enrichment and political power. Guilty parties on both sides. How do you become multimillionaires on 150k - 175k annual salary? These people are entrenched. The top 3 Democrats, Pelosi, Schumer and Hoyer alone have been in office for over 100 years combined. Yet, these political hacks relentlessly attack the new guy, Trump, and try to pin THEIR ineffectiveness on him. We need term limits.

Lastly, the Trump's were international business professionals and Millionaire/Billionaires before President Trump was elected. They stopped all business acquisition, the President does not take his salary. Yet, he is under constant attack and accused of corruption by those aforementioned hacks?

Does any of this beckon the rational side of one's brain? Does any of this not make you question?

Winston Churchill I believe was the author of the mostly correct quote.

Well said. When a person sees how horrible the Democrats are, they're about halfway to seeing how bad the situation in this nation really is.

It’s extremely frustrating.

@onlybecause12 ..The phrase appears to have originated with Francois Guizot (1787-1874). It was later revived by French Premier Clemenceau.

I just joined this site. I do hope you reconsider your decision. The easiest way to deal with trolls is to simply ignore them. If nobody responds or acknowledges their posts, they soon lose interest; as it is your attention that they really crave...any attention at all....good or bad.

Don't quit so easily, my friend. I wouldn't expect that this format will take off with no trolling or interference from the regressive left. I would humbly suggest that when you realize an exchange has become irrational and/or uncivil (trollish), to simply disengage. Bore them out of the community. Fight the good fight.

People often downplay social media debates and discussions with memes of arguing on the internet. They think it's a waste of time. It's not hard to feel that way given how difficult it is to convince others. But sometimes when ego gets involved while a person may not admit you have convinced them, to you, in other walks of their life they may adopt a better position (so long as you don't know about it so their ego remains unscathed).

Words are vital. Debate is vital. The only other option is a nightmare.

@WingedRyno Agreed. To be clear, my opinion is that intellectual debate IS vital, and our freedom of speech is to be exercised and valued, or lost. However, in the internet debate format there are moments when you realize that the opposition is not open to new ideas, and is only there to frustrate and distract. You have to know when to leave it alone, and save your energy for a real opportunity to teach and/or be taught.

If you leave the trolls win.
I have a suspicion one of the more obvious trolls here is actually trying to stop people from posting and discussing here... it is more sinister than just trolling. It is a direct attack against free speech.

Agreed... It’s the playbook... if you don’t think like I do then you are bad... well bring it troll. I give zero about what any troll thinks of me.

You're absolutely right. They inject confusion so we have to continually re explain things, however, they frame it so others will bite and back them. It wastes our time here. I had one guy comb my FB and ask if my mother (using her name) was accountable too. It didn't sway me at all but that is the depths they will go to.

Yep, just realizing who is a troll is the best way to pretend that this is like real life. In life we often must re-explain basic facts because new listeners often arrive and we can't let the basics go unexplained to people new to the discussion. A few trolls are helpful, depending upon on how much confusion is caused. Just look at it as what any elected official must deal with.

Freedom of speech is a messy business. You make the mistake of disparaging the site, when the drama is largely the part of a small group. I understand why you wish to be away from drama, but drama is just a part of any group. I will guarantee there were more than a few drama queens who were part of the American Constutional Convention or part of the British groups discussing the Magna Carta. It is a part of human nature that loud boisterous and entertaining people draw more of a crowd than the quiet intellectuals discussing the fine points of policy.

9

Reason and unity are all fine and well. But unfortunately we find ourselves in a battle for the very soul and thus future of western civilization. The animosity and tribalism you decry are natural offshoots of the “culture wars”. Do not lament. Pick a side and stand your ground. Do not leave the discussion because you find it objectionable. This is a shunning of your duty as a free human. Speak your peace. Let others do the same. And make your choice.

I’ve said previously that a site like this, especially being fairly new, needs some firm moderation, especially at the start. You’ve identified the problem. First, it hasn’t reached a critical mass where posts get good interaction. It’s just too small. Secondly, there’s a handful of trolls - we all know who they are — who just drop insults and stupid comments that serve no purpose except to entertain themselves.

You can block these people.

I hope you rethink your decision to leave. The weapon of the authoritarian progressive — since they refuse to engage in conversation — is to wear their opponents down. And they will continue to win as long as reasonable people keep running away.

Sorry to hear your experience has been less then ideal. You really can't avoid the leftist trolls no matter were you go..Best to just ignore them. peace out

Just arriving at this place and I like the way you write. Sorry you're leaving when I am just getting here (sniffs armpit) as it seems like I was looking for people like you to engage with and those numbers are dwindling everywhere. If you do return and I am still here I will look forward to engeaging with you on some mutually interesting topics. I think Karma (or God however you perceive things) brings to us that which we project. Unfortunately with the amount of negative energy bombarding us we fall into the trap of reprojecting it sometimes. As we reproject that negative energy Karma then bounces it back at us and with all the free floating negative energy already bombarding us it gets multiplied. The way to combat it I believe is look for ways in which we sin and create negative energies and eliminate them and project as much positive as we can. Peace be with you and hope you don't give up. Stay Positive!

I just joined as well. Let's connect sometime soon.

I really enjoyed many of your contributions and am sorry to see you go. I share many of your frustrations with you and totally understand your picking sanity over whatever this is 😊 Its not what I had hoped thats for sure, but there are a few I follow here and their contributions make it worth while for me and it is because of them that I have hope that sanity will eventually prevail. So I hope you won't delete your account for now, but respect your decision to do so.

I tend to agree, particularly with regard to the trolls. It’s difficult to stick around when every fourth or fifth post is just irritating nonsense. It’s especially ironic when you consider the intense censorship that is enforced elsewhere. The hecklers’ veto is on full display here. I’m not leaving. And I don’t favor shutting anyone down. But it is difficult to see any point in discussion with some on this (and probably any other) site. Thought it might be different here.

6

I’m here for levelheaded conversation myself. I think it’s people like you and I that are going to make the difference on this site. If you leave? The trolls win. I’d stick around if I were you. Find the people that makes sense and that use critical thinking and stick with them. Give it a minute. If you still think it sucks after a while then dump it. I myself I’m going to give it a shot

I'm m new too, here. Thanks 🙂

6

Its your choice. I'm new here. Sorry to read this. Don't let the Trolls win. They want to have people give up; its their preferred weapon. It results in the intellectual vacuum they desire.

6

I like your posts... F the trolls. Their whole reason for being is to screw with good people who care about the issues. Leaving let’s them win. F that. They just make me more determined to make my point. I’ll ignore a troll all day long... Trolls aren’t here to learn another viewpoint. Trolls aren’t here to have intellectual conversation. We know who they are and can ignore them. I actually have gratitude that I’m not closed minded like they are. Most of the time they make me laugh at their tactics. I have learned a lot from this community that I wouldn’t have otherwise. So don’t leave...just take a break...

Hello. Sorry that you're upset. And you must be a sincere person because you take this community very seriously.
Unfortunately, this is still a virtual world. Very few of us reveal our real names and most of us are behind masks. When we are behind masks, we pretend to be someone else we are not - brave, heroic, idealistic, romantic, loving, feisty, aggressive, silly, rude, etc., etc. we can be anyone (avatar) because it is all in the virtual world.
If you encounter any comments you don't like, just ignore them and move on. If you don't like trolls (although I don't see any truly hostile individuals here), just block them, and they'll have nothing to do with you.
I always tell myself that this is just a virtual world, don't mix it up with the real world, and funnily enough, I find the virtual world is a lot more manageable than the real world I live in.
You're gonna be alright.
All the best.

I have just joined this site so I am unaware of what you are talking about, but I agree it would be a shame if this was the case. The only way to combat troll behaviour is NOT to respond to it. I know its difficult at times to do that and easy to get sucked in. The question you might ask yourself before you leave is: Can I ignore the trolls and just reply to the reasonable discussants. That's the only way trolls will disappear - if they are ignored - they will hate that and go somewhere else. A troll gets off on a reply to their posts that they can deride. Just something to consider, but good wishes whatever your decision. Thanks for posting!

I'm new here; I'm new to everything; I feel like I just came from an egg; I hatched; Ive smashed the fuselage open; my hands reaching behind the oxygen chamber; my head is peering out the cracked egg shell; all is quiet; but something is definitely wrong. I'm concerned about the country. As my body absorbs information from various sources within my state; I'm noticing an underlying terror within me. I have this doomsday feeling; we are headed for a revolution; I feel sad....

You are truly not alone and the revolution has already begun and is world wide. I had to convince myself that there are still like minded, freedom loving people who care about the individuals rights, was losing hope! But the signs of a turnaround are everwhere. Welcome, hopefully you will find some of that community here and the trolls are.best left unanswered.

It does feel that way. Which is unfortunate because we the people will lose big time should it come to that. There will be no winners. This isn't 1776.

Don't allow others to vampire you. That's weakness. Let it blow through you and keep moving forward. Hope to interact with you, I just joined with vital information...and then I saw the lovely "Tier System".

2

Don't give up. There are bound to be people who love to debate. I like your recap of the Celtic story vs the Romans. Especially since I always wondered why the Romans were so disgusted by the Druids, given their own barbarism. But there are just too many things to research in life, and I didn't have time for that one.

2

Glad you're still here.
First, this web stuff has a natural depressing effect and it is totally appropriate to take a break. Maybe do the whole Sabbath thing.
Second, I find the counter perspective necessary. You can't sharpen a knife on a bar of soap. And, without testing, I tend to get lazy.
Third, if you want, you can block HighQ. If you do, let me know. I'll be happy to convey his repentance and apology posts to you (smile).

"...mostly what I see on here is people launching into arguments and tirades and hating each other for disagreeing"

examples please

I have not seen this kind of vitriol at all here on IDW Community.

Well Masked Rider Chris. I just joined yesterday. Funny thing about troll's is that we all become one now and then, sooner or later; just not always.
This is a new platform and it's going to have growing pains. About three years ago I went 'dark' and only just returned to social media to promote my new upcoming book. I had promised myself and anyone who visited my FB page I'd be abstaining from posting anything religious or political...and shortly thereafter, I became a transgressor.
Hang in there, the troll's - like bugs - will eventually get weeded out

A drama free diet. I read once we create our reality. To change our reality we must shift our perception of that reality. We each inter into dialogue with expectations. Some we have created from past experiences, some from our own fears, some from what we HOPE to have. From your post it would seem you don't feel any of your expectations are being met. I read in that same article, our expectations are our personal creation. They are based on our fear. Fear of being wrong, fear of not being understood, fear of failing to understand another point of view. But those are YOUR expectations, something you created. It's a two edged sword. They cannot touch you unless you allow it because you control what you allow in, just like you control what you allow out. Insults, things you perceive as attacks, division, all these things are created from what is feared. By both you and the person you perceive as attacking. You control how you perceive any interaction. Not they.
The law of attraction states we will attract what we fear or love the most. We get what we want, we attract that we desire when we quit being afraid. Fear/love are opposites, you cannot have both, one will always be stronger and THAT is what you attract. Drama free happens when we realize it's THEIR drama, not ours and we see their fear. THAT changes our perception and our reality.

Time to grow up and thicken the skin -- trolls, sheep and slaves only going to change -- or go away, when exposed and confronted, ignoring them gives them power -- the slippery slop...Debate and competition are essential to allow us to make better informed choices... I say bring them on!!
