Is it time to halt all immigration?
With democrats now in control of the house, too many open boarder republicans, and an out of control judicial system, the immigration issue will not be fixed.
I firmly believe that this is the only leverage the President has to force change.
Once done, he can announce that when the wall is built, e-verify is a requirement for employment, anchor baby policies are ended and merit based only immigration is allowed then, and only then will the doors to this great country open again.
How about it everyone?

A rapid “demographic shift” is helping to replace President Donald Trump’s base of white working-class voters with Democrat supporters, the Wall Street Journal reports.

Here is an idea. Rather than spend the billions of dollars it takes to confront illegals at the border we should punish employers who knowingly hire them. This includes commercial employment like landscaping businesses, restaurants, construction, agriculture, as well as private/domestic employers. If your nanny is an illegal alien then you should be severely fined and face the probability of jail time. Also if you are harboring illegal aliens you should be severely fined and face serious jail time. The things I suggest are all within the law. There really is no need for "immigration reform". What is needed is for American employers and LEO and political officials to obey the law and to do their sworn duties - faithfully.

I agree. They federal government should also end the practice of issuing tax ID numbers and should crack down on states who issue drivers license with confirming legal status. I think the administration should immediately incarcerate anyone who crosses the boarder before claiming asylum which they can also do.

I think that is a common sentiment. If laws on the books were enforced we would not have an illegal immigration problem. For example: there are laws about number of occupants allowed in a residential domicile that are not enforced. Translation: 10-15 people are not supposed to be able to legally take up residence in a single family home under normal circumstances.

Enforcing the legal number of occupants also takes care of the illegal employment issue because this is how they afford to live while driving down wages. People making a minimum wage of $9.00 per hour could not live on their own, but they could survive in a house with 9 other people making $9/hr. Because the household income is $90/hr. Get it?

I'm not convinced I follow your logic. If by "the immigration issue" you mean illegal I'm migration, I don't see how making it harder to come into the country legally with suppress those coming here illegally. It also seems analagous to left wing calls to ban guns to stop gun violence. Stopping law abiding citizens won't stop those who break the law.

Help me understand...how does this approach make legal immigration harder? As I see it, this speaks only to the illegal aliens, not those who are legally working to gain citizenship.

@MamaLaura with the initial question "is it time to halt all immigration?". I'm not sure how else to interpret that other than legal and illegal immigration. OP doesn't argue this to be a permanent policy, but I'm not sure it would be constructive even temporarily. I might be misunderstanding the argument of course but that's what it sounds like to me.

people who cross the border are not citizens period regardless of whether they cross legally or not. If they did cross the border illegally then they are by definition criminals as well as being non-citizens. criminal is not law abiding. hiring criminals (those illegally present here in USA) is also a criminal act and should be prosecuted. Knowingly harboring and housing illegal aliens is also a criminal act and should be prosecuted.

@iThink I don't disagree with you on any of that. All I'm saying is that I don't see why we need to stop legal immigration to deal with illegal immigration. Maybe I have misunderstood your argument, but it sounds like you want to stop illegal immigration, not immigration altogether? If that is the case, I'm not sure how temporarily stopping legal immigration helps solve the issue of illegal immigration.

because the border has been crashed by about 50k aliens in the last 5 months and the processing system is overwhelmed. It needs to be shut down immediately and until we can establish a system that is orderly and properly working in order that we know who is entering our country and why.@SageClithsby

Yes. No more immigrants for at least 20 years.

@HaHaJohnnyB, first, you win the internet avatar award. Awesome!

I've heard if we cut all immigration for a period of time, we'd create a real problem in the labor force that could ripple and get out of control.

As an immigrant who did it legally, paid out the ass and still almost got deported, I don't think halting all immigration is the answer. I do, however, think it should be a terrifying a prospect to be caught sneaking into this country as it is to almost every other country. Punishments for illegal entry should be severe. Also, non citizens and citizens alike need to be loyal to this country and this country alone or get out.

America loves legal immigrants! Just sayin'. (except the ones who want to destroy the country, Omar--ehem)

@chuckpo I love this country, and actually know what our culture is: Freedom. There is one party that wants to take our freedoms away from us, and as a country, we should be fighting back.

The borders were open to immigrants in the 60's -70's and 80's because there was a shortage of workers, I'm pretty sure it's been completed by now,, what's the motivation now ????

An interesting idea: We're talking about this huge problem with unskilled workers when AI replaces a crap-ton of jobs. Does it make sense to keep bringing in loads of unskilled workers? Aren't we just making the problem worse?

Is anyone steering the boat?

I'm probably a contrarian on this, but "Immigration" alone isn't the issue. ILLEGAL immigration is. We absolutely need the wall and we need to put stops in place against anyone coming in illegally or overstaying their visa.
On the other paw, if people want to come here to become American CITIZENS and participate in our "Great Experiment" and will do it legally, we need to make the process somewhat more simple than it currently is.

That said, we also need to be willing to root out the scum that are already here that were born here and don't realize just how good they have it, and want to wreck our country at every turn (Enemies: Domestic - I think is how the Constitution defines that) THEY are a bigger threat than anyone coming in legally.

Until we stop that flow of illegal invasion in, however, we're just going to have more and more of the same.

Agreed, but how we should manage legal immigration is a reasonable topic for discussion too. How many people should we be letting in every year? Seems too high to ME right now. I think we should think about it and pick a number that's more manageable with an eye toward the future.

I seem to remember something about "create a barrier" or "raise the fence?" I don't know, its been a while.

Too bad too many of the politicians are too chickenshit to let that happen, and have been fighting it at every turn, and every time someone tries to point to something good, they claim that everyone else is being "divisive".

I'm certain that the US needs to stop the flow of migrants. We need time to assimilate those who are here and to normalize the workforce. I've got a guy cutting dead trees on my property this week, an American, negotiating a deal I would never in a million years do the work for unless starving. It's a good price for me, but not a "living wage" for any who are assimilated into Western society. He's offering work at a wage that doesn't pay for the stuff most of us consider necessities. He's competing with migrant labor among a people who are supposed to prefer countrymen to cheap. If he gets the work done he's going to be stunned at the tip I offer, but in the end it will be fair wage for fair production.

give him a living wage thanks

It’s been halted before for the benefit of the country.
