Jordan Peterson regularly claims that nobody buys books, and very few people read, especially men. And if men do read, they read non fiction. Personally i am an avid reader of both, fiction and non. I love the works of Dan Brown & Don Winslow. The Dark Tower Series by Stephen King May be my favorite novel series ever written. I’m curious where he gets this idea that men don’t read fiction, what measuring statistics are used to make that determination, and what other forms of media consumption are being considered when making that judgment. He challenges the idea of men reading fiction, then persistently claims how much insight we can learn from stories, and the great works of fiction. I love Jordan Peterson, consider myself a huge fan and follow his work and lectures closely, but this challenge of men reading fiction has always perplexed me. I proudly support authors and gladly buy a minimum of 2 books a month and don’t consider myself an anomaly. I believe as long as we have quality writers, which we certainly do today, we will always have readers.

Dr. Peterson may be correct. According to Statista, the percentage of Americans that have read at least one book (in any format, ebook, audio) has declined from 80% in 2011 to 72% in 2019. I think Statista is generally believed to be pretty accurate although I didn't review their primary source of data, which should be done for verification. Regardless, in my own sphere of influence and based solely on localized personal empirical observations, I do have a general perception that percentage wise there are a diminishing number of people reading books. Perhaps time spent on social media might be part of the problem? Myself, I am an avid old school reader. Books. Not e-books which I find tedious, I'm talking bound and large print (lol, a bitch getting old). Personally I spend a horrendous amount of money ordering books on-line. Thankfully we are blessed to have a great library system here in Jefferson Parish which helps defray the cost of my voracious appetite for the printed word.
