I am new to IDW and am enjoying the postings and civil interactions about a range of topics. Today my wife and I had lunch and a visit to the home of a friend originally from Delhi India who we first met when we hosted him through Couchsurfing.com. He now lives in Canada, started his own business and is so grateful to be here. We can share frank discussions about the differences in our cultures and neither is offended by our questions or answers and most often we have a good laugh about the differences. That said, as people, we have more similarities than differences. He often expresses to me that he does not understand why people come to Canada from abroad but do not want to share Canadian values, learn the language and integrate. Canada was settled by people with an attitude of integrating and that is how we became one of the most desirable countries in the world. It saddens me that there are those in government and the public that believe that we need to alter our country to accommodate those who immigrate here. If we do that, we lose the uniqueness that attracts the millions who want to enjoy our Canada.

We should NEVER alter our country for those who immigrate. However, according to the many people I talked to in Banff for three years, none of them want to change anything in our country except rules that would expedite their immigration. The only ones who might want to change our culture are the Muslims and since they are a minority, that's not likely to happen. I hope.

TimDavidson, Kudos to you and your wife for building a relationship with this immigrant family in Canada. For immigrants, that is how integration actually happens...through interacting with--and befriending--other Canadians. As an immigrant myself (who feels fully integrated in Canada), I was "mentored" by a couple of Canadians who are still my friends today after 20 years of my moving to Canada; we still visit each others' homes, go out, support one another, and chat about all kinds of topics.

I'm sad to see that many newcomers who actually want to become fully Canadian cannot find Canadian citizens to befriend, so they end up staying within their own closed cultural communities from back "home". This feeds the self-segregation. Anyway, welcome to this site, and thanks for sharing.

Nicely said. If America or Canada were as racisit or xenophobic as the progressives imply no one would want to immigrate to north America at all.
