Leftism is mostly driven by emotional rather than practical thinking. If predominant use of emotional thinking were the best way to run the world then the world would be dominated by 15 year old girls - right?

No sane person expects nor wants a culture that operates purely on logic. How tragic that would be! Even 1st Officer Spock revealed some emotion in rare moments - but oh, wait. Spock was half human wasn't he. As human beings we can not sever our emotions any more than we can cut out our own hearts. Nor should we strive for heartlessness in the management of our (human) culture. Emotions are critically important but should not be the primary operatis mundi. I believe it is in our nature to respond emotionally under stress and to act before thinking and this is never or almost never going to lead to a desirable result. It is a challenge to all people to remain objective even half the time. When reading blog entries, essays, other forms of transfered information, or when listening to the news and editorial content that bombards us 24-7 it would be helpful to evaluate that content. That is to say we should take measure of its tenor. Is it objective, logical, does it sound like it comes from reasoned thinking or does it sound hyperbolic, outrageous, manipulative, angry; is the voice you hear on the radio or the TV or the computer trying to manipulate you or is it trying to inform you. I am saying that when we formulate our goals and set strategies to accomplish those goals we should behave like mature, reasonable thoughtful people and no so much like hyper-emotional teenagers.

Well spoken.
Puts me in mind of Rush's song Hemispheres... the conflict between Dionysus and Apollo, The Battle of Heart and Mind.
Emotions are easier to manipulate... but disinformation or selective information distribution can manipulate clear thinking as well.

interesting comment. I'm going to go find Rush doing that song and listen more closely that before.@An_Ominous

I hope you realize my post is not to be taken as an absolute or literal observation. Just trying to make a point with a touch of humor...

No, but it should be serious... we need to form a Spockocracy 🙂

I recommend The Righteous Mind by Jonathan Haidt.

Wait, you're telling me the world isn't run by 15 year-old girls?
But... but.. that explained so much of the current way of the world.

People tend to make their political choices based on emotions... and that is true on both ends of the political spectrum. But... some people then engage their intellect working their way backwards "rationalizing" their beliefs and shoring up their intuitive choice with some degree of reason.
From my perspective... that rational justification of our political choices has become a whole hell of a lot easier on the conservative side of things.

Charles Krauthammer I believe is one of the few to base his politics solely on logic... and observation. I think Ben Shapiro may be another of those select few.

Most people probably come to their political views a via little bit of both, logical and emotional thought processes.

However at the moment the DNC is pushing a great deal of their agenda through sheer emotional appeal with little regard to facts. Nancy Pelosi actually said this to the DHS Secretary... "I reject your facts." The Secretary replied, "They aren't my facts, they are the facts.... as gathered by a government agency."

Unfortunately, I think of late, those who practice Emotional Politics seem to feel no compunction whatsoever to justify their positions with facts. In extemis / actual debate, in lieu of facts these sorts of people resort to ad hominem attacks.

A couple of examples...

  1. Liberals claim "You're putting children in cages!" They ignore that this practice has been going on for a long time yea even during the Obama presidency. They ignore that the partitions aren't really cages... and that our immigration system is being inundated by as many as 100K immigrants in a month. They ignore the fact that when the decision was made to put children into separate facilities it was for their protection from adults who might not actually be family members, and those facilities were much kinder than prison cells offering amenities such as entertainment and education. They ignore the fact that when this was passed it was hailed as being humanitarian. They only respond to the emotionally charged words children and cages.

  2. Walls are immoral. Priestess Pelosi (and the Pussy-hats) decreed this... but it obviously isn't so and she obviously doesn't believe it... spending no small percentage of her life behind bastions of Granite Iniquity.
(Bastions of Granite Iniquity is a decent name for a band.)

Sorry for the rambling response...
I know a lot of conservatives that base their politics on emotion... and sometimes justify such with but a scant few facts. People of political insight are those who can rationally show us why some choices are good or bad, if not right or wrong.
