When I was in the Marine Corps, we had an ethic to not leave anyone behind, dead, wounded or well. In Korea in December of 1950, General Smith made tremendous effort to rescue every US Army soldier they could reach. The First Marine Division marched out of the encirclement with all of their own heavy equipment and much of the Army's too. And soldiers were given the same consideration as Marines when the breakout happened.
