Labels…..
I have been called a racist. Yet I have never disrespected, denied or damaged anyone based solely on race.

I have been called a sexist. Yet I am the son of a strong woman. The husband to a brilliant, successful, focused woman. The father of a tough, smart, ambitious woman. Friends with many women of similar talent and strength.

I have been called a homophobe. Yet I have been an honored guest at same sex marriages. My gay niece often comes to seek my counsel because she knows I love and care for her. My gay friends know that I would never deny them their dignity regardless of my religious beliefs. Nor does my God instruct me to do so.

I have been called a bigot. Yet I encourage and even seek out debate with those of differing viewpoints. My disagreements are based in my honest and examined beliefs and always respectful.

What have you been labeled that is simply wrong? Why is it acceptable to shout down those that are labeled arbitrarily but those who claim to hate labels? Can we ever get to a place of honest civil public discourse?

Thoughts? Opinions? Stop by Eclectic Encyclopedia and tell us your labels and how to fix this culture!!

I've found that the tactic of labeling, arbitrarily, your opposition is done to invalidate everything they've said that is empirically supported, because they're an "ist" or "ism" and now, you don't have to address the facts they've brought forward.

I think it's in keeping with a post modern philosophy in which the ultimate goal is the seizure of power, because under that philosophy nothing but power exists. That's why there's such a pervasive notion of "patriarchy" or "racism" in this generation, because they've been taught that philosophy and its altered the lense or paradigm through which they view the world.

I'm a 60 year old conservative white Christian male. I'm looking for work. Social worker by education and practiced for almost three decades. Two references are from, transgender woman, transgenger man, and one from a black Muslim woman. I may not agree but I treat all people as people. Interviewers have changed in twenty years. They want to know what you think about things much more than in my recent history of social work.

Generally speaking, when being attacked as a sexist, racist, homophobic, etc. While discussing issues with someone, it means you have won the argument. They have no further facts or logic to combat your position. All that is left for them is emotion. I simply consider the argument won when that Happens and I let the other party know that as well.

I've been called everything under the sun and I don't understand half of them. Maybe I'm from a generation where sticks and stones may break your bones but names will never hurt you, it's only these millennials which need safe places I would send them up chimneys

Well, you had me at 'Nor does my God instruct me to do so.' Touche'.

I am a Christain. My Lord did not shun or hate people.

"A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another."Jonh 13:34

@Boardwine, preaching to the choir in this case. Not many Christians like that conversation much. I have a rant or two about how the church replaced God's love with judgment, condemnation, and contempt. I also put much of the blame for the backlash against the church right on the church steps. It's my view, if God's people simply did what God tells us to do, the world would literally be different, and the secular world wouldn't be threatened at all by the church. Disclosure: I consider myself part of the church. Many of those I run into from 'the church' probably wouldn't accept me as one of them.

The part I haven't figured out is how me judging, condemning, being contemptuous toward the church is different from the judgment, condemnation, and contempt I'm criticizing, haha.

@chuckpo spot on. Couldn’t agree more.

@Boardwine You can love an evil person all you want but you do not bring him/her into your home.

@Missingu I don't eat from a fruit tree that doesn't produce, doesn't mean I have to cut it down and toss it in the fire.

It's a divisive concept that is working brilliantly. They use these terms to villify and dehumanize their oposition.

without a doubt.

Identity Politics along with Victimolgy using fake virtue signalling to shut down any different thought to gain power over others.
Shutting down people too enforce their domination only ends one way.....

As soon as someone labels me I quit listening because they are no longer engaging me - just their image of me. If they've already taken me out of the conversation there is no reason to hang around.

I question their lable.Challenge it. But it rarely works.

I guess I have lost both patience and concern regarding the opinions of the lazy. Figuring stuff out is hard. It takes work. If someone is engaging me on any topic of importance I expect diligence, honesty and effort (a little creativity goes a long way). When someone resorts to an ad hominem attack they've run out of useful things to say. Their opinion of who or what I am is of little consequence to me as they lack the discernment to have a useful opinion.
