Poverty! What is it? What is its definition in modern societies? People come on TV and tell us how poor they are. But, I observe that they have a lot more makeup on than I do; They have nice hair; they wear top brand pairs of shoes; they wear really expensive hoodies; and they have iPhones! When I make an observation like this, there is always someone who tells me that I lack compassion. 😟 What's wrong with me?

Welfare is the problem. Some need it but most are using it for there only income and the illegals are using it off the charts . Baby after baby and so are Americans but it’s Americans money, it’s not right . There is no poor unless you create your own downfall ,Not here in America. It’s choices made and when you don’t have values and fathers in the house hold , no family structure this is how you get victim mentality and more racism, more “poor people “ they just live of the system. Just a thought.

I totally agree! People insist so much on their rights and entitlements, but where are their responsibilities? In the UK, the welfare system and the healthcare system are very good, so much so that there are always some who abuse the systems. Too much free stuff makes people lazy, perhaps. Also, I think that it's high time that traditional values were appreciated again - the traditional family structure of father, mother and children, that kind of values.

Just a thought....So in the 1920s you had a string of all black ethnic enclave communities and some began to create insular economies and some where very successful. Simular to the Jewish ones we have heard of in Germany. Well, for some reason during that time you found a rash of genocidal attacks on these communities... Rosewood massacre and the Tulsa race riot to name a few. It's a strange coincidence this was also during a time when there was massive poverty and income inequality and also to no surprise the wealthy used blacks as a escape goat to turn the gaze off of their crimes against the working poor.

Poverty involves a lot more than being poor . That's why I wrote :

"The Real Weapon of Mass Destruction : POVERTY"

"Real History" Group

Oh, thank you! I'll certainly take a look.

Go to the Philippines. Then you'll know poverty.

Yet, they manage to smile and keep their families together (generally speaking) - do you think they have more resilience than us?

@Naomi The people there seem much happier and less insecure than Americans. Yes, I think poverty brings people together and keeps people humble. Wealth tends to isolate people and boost their egos to the point of constant dissatisfaction.

Remember all the Occupation protesters and seeing them laying about in their impromptu tent cities with their iPhones and iPads?

They were the 99% poor or so they believed

I know what you mean! Drives me nuts! Our society seems to longer know about savings, needs vs. Wants, prioratizing, budgeting, etc... whats scarey is that the next generation of politicians and community leaders will likely severely lack these skills and mind frames.

In one way I agree with putting our country/Community first and meeting it's needs before spreading our extras around BUT where is the line drawn? Everyone has nutrition each meal? Everyone has steak each meal?

In the UK, the welfare system and the healthcare system are good. They're supported by tax payers and the services are provided free at the point of delivery. You can imagine that some people take the advantage of and abuse the systems. Too much free stuff seems to make people lazy. They go on about their rights and entitlements but never about taking responsibilities for their own actions and suffering their own consequences.
