I don't know if you read in the news what just happened in province of Quebec. Yvan Godbout has been arrested for his book "Hansel and Gretel". This is the worst example of censorship! If he is accused, imagine what can happening to Stephen King, or the author of Game of Thrones for Sansa's rape...

His book : [amazon.ca]

Original article : [journaldemontreal.com]

Translation : This saga goes back to January 2018 when a teacher from the North Shore had complained to the police because of a troubling passage in the novel Hansel and Gretel, from the Tales forbidden series.

In the horror book, the author describes in a very explicit way a man sexually assaulting a 9-year-old girl.

Launched in September 2017, the book was on sale in several big box stores, including Costco and Walmart, and had some success.

The book was removed from the shelves in the wake of the police investigation conducted by the SQ.

Always on sale

A file had been submitted to the Director of Criminal and Penal Prosecutions (DPCP) in February, but there had been no charges so far. In April, the publishing house even sold its book.

"I was under the impression that it was closed. It's surreal as a situation. It's starting to look like censorship, "said former Verchères MP Stephane Bergeron, who used social networks on Thursday to denounce the situation.

The ex-elected had taken to heart the controversy around the business of his constituency, going as far as to question the former Acting Director General of the SQ, Yves Morency, in parliamentary committee last year.

He replied that the police force responded to citizens' complaints and did not censor.

Informed of the new developments by the owner of the publishing house François Doucet, Mr. Bergeron says he feels helpless in the turn of events.

The editor told the Journal not to comment on the situation, on the advice of his lawyers.

The revisited version of Hansel and Gretel Yvan Godbout was still on sale Thursday on various online trading sites including.

This time however, the inventory of books was seized by the police during the raid on the AdA editions.

Nothing will happen to Mr King. He is as leftie as they get.

I'm of the opinion that you can discuss anything. And something tells me the author was not exactly condoning it in any way. If he was, discussing it would be the best way to explain how wrong he was. In either case, censorship does not eradicate ideas, it just makes it harder to spot those who secretly want to commit evil deeds and avoid or dissuade them.

I expect this will be unpopular, but I am glad. I don't think free speech should extend to sexual assaults against boys and girls.
Also, I don't recall the pornographically detailed sexual assault of a child in Brother Karamasov or any other classic literature.

While if I came across these graphic descriptions I would certainly cringe, I in no way can support it's censorship. This is too slippery a slope! Who gets to decide what is acceptable? I can only hope that you are correct about the unpopularity of this thinking.

Where do you, personally, draw the line? At what point do you believe child pornography is no longer okay? When there are drawings with the words? Photos? Video? Or should all of those be just fine, and it should never be censored? Not allowing pornographic videos of children is censorship. Does child pornography not have a slippery slope?

@Catherine , well what he wrote was fiction. Imagine it they do the same for all authors, Stephn King will be in jail, same for Game of Thrones author and many other. There is no line to draw, it is rather fiction or physical. I heavily condone rape, those who doing that should be castrated.

@LinuxWiz I presume you meant you condemn rape rather than condone it. I interchange words in odd ways at times, too.
I am not aware of any pornographically detailed rape scenes involving 9 year old girls in Game of Thrones or any of Stephen King's novels. I remember a scene with a bad guy looking for sex with young girls. If I recall correctly, Arya Stark killed him. Sansa Stark was significantly older than 9 years old when The Hound saved her from being raped.
For as corrupt as the Sûreté are, I don't buy into the narrative that this guy has been arrested just to increase censorship on legitimate, non-pedophile literature. SQ said the arrest was specifically in response to citizen complaints.
The Court will sort it out.
In the meantime, it's good for a pedophile to be outed, and that conviction is by his own writings.

@Catherine , yes you are right, I meant "condemn". This is because English is not my first language. As for the police, they do actually arrested him and both the author and the editor have to go to court. They indeed been arrested to have wrote a rape in a fiction/horror book. Tell me, have you read Game of Thrones book where Sansa got rape? Same for Brothers Karamasov and many others such as Patrick Canuel etc...

@LinuxWiz It is important to be honest about the situation. They are not arrested because they wrote rape in a fiction / horror book. You are making a completely false equivalency. They are arrested because a significant number of citizens made complains about pornographic rape of a 9 year old little girl in a book. There is no comparison between Game of Thrones or Brothers Karamasov.

@Catherine Have you ever read Stephen King's It? There is a scene where a group of underage children have sex with each other. It may not be as explicitly described as the scene in Godbout's book, but similarities can be drawn.

It is official, the Montérégie writer and publisher will finally be charged with producing child pornography for a passage from a successful novel describing the rape of a young girl.... Where our society is going?
