I have found from experience that there are two reasons people want more gun control. These are (1) To be able to have unfettered control. (2) They have not been around firearms and the unknown scares them based on how they are shown on television.
I think it's important to accurately represent the position of your opposition. Public safety os actually a reason most gun-control activists would list.
I think you can safely discard the idea that people want to introduce gun control laws because they want “unfettered control”: they have no direct influence on the policy, and they (usually) won’t be the ones implementing it.
People who are genuinely concerned with controlling other people, usually only enjoy doing so directly.
In any case, you are not arguing in good faith here, as both of these points are an attack on your opponent’s character.
Gun control is strictly about controlling the citizens.
