What do you think of this? Sweden privatized its SSI. Has a national school voucher system. Sold all its state owned businesses. Privatized its national railway system. Privatized most of its welfare system. Cut spending, lowered taxes.
Does not sound like socialism.
Sweden is not socialist in the absolute sense (although neither was China, Cuba or the USSR), and I think few socialists would claim otherwise.
Instead, Sweden takes an approach that combines free market capitalism with a strong welfare state. They didn’t even protect SAAB from bankruptcy even though it was a source of national pride (most countries would have saved it)
However, when most American liberals talk about “socialism” they mean the latter, not the former. Very few on the left are calling for workers soviets, or even state ownership of key industries. They mean healthcare and pensions.
And don’t forget, the reason this is even called socialism is because the right wing adopted it as a term for attacking democrats.
They had to. Their social programs were costing too much. This is what people in North American don’t understand. It is not sustainable to have big social programs and unimpeded immigration. You run out of money. Canada is going down the same road. Sweden has started to have the general population push back against the immigration that is happening. I hope it is not too late. I lived in Sweden for two years and love the country. My Swedish has suffered from 20 years of not finding anyone in Canada to talk to.
No surprises there, can't have true success with only a socialist system in place...
