Want to get your thoughts on new way to visual the political spectrum and the role of the IDW movement. I'm thinking that the IDW represents the antidote to divisiveness and political extremism - be it on the far left or right. As one moves to either extreme, the rhetoric and demonization of the other side converge to the same thing but different named enemies and tribes. Our movement is characterized by humanizing our political opponents regardless of affiliation to create shared common ground.

Stupid is as Stupid does and you can't fix stupid. It's a tough world.

What goes around, comes around? 😉

As someone who at various points in my life has pretty much run the gamut of the political spectrum as it’s traditionally defined, I’d say you’re close, but more in a way that we have a gift to present them with, that gift being as honest an assessment as engagement with them as we are capable of. The point to remember is that we have to try and filter out their prejudices, they won’t return the favour. So more a long and painful process of cure than an antidote.

That sounds very nice, but I don't think it is true. I think what people such as Jordan Peterson and Sam Harris have in common is an ability to discuss the world as it is, including the fact that others disagree. It is a measure of the strength and clarity of ones beliefs to be able to recognize that others differ, and to be willing to discuss it with them.
Cathy Newman's problem was (as is, one must suppose) that her beliefs are so weakly grounded that she can't admit, even to herself, that other beliefs even exist. I recall Jordan recently having a conversation where he pointed out studies in the Scandanavian countries, and the woman 'debating' him basically said, "Well, what I prefer to think is true is..." She was literally unable to fit the facts into her paradigm, so she merely stayed in the world of her own imaginings.

My point of departure is always th Nolan spectrum at the very least, and more complex models after that depending on the conversational context.

(I’m sure this particular link is neither new nor surprising to anyone [en.m.wikipedia.org] )

But you’re specifically trying to contrast people who talk to others with different beliefs, and those who are too reactive and polarized to do so, it seems...

That link is broken. You need to take the close-parentheses off the end of it.

The false idea that political views fall upon a line is devastating to political discourse. A Neo Nazi would be called 'far right', and Jewish gun owner would be called 'far right'. This merely makes a hash of any reasonable discussion.

@VonO Yeah - there’s no historical nuance there at all, and only a superficial consideration of the details of each political value system.

Impressing the importance of the individual as a consumer upon the political sphere - it is not devoid of financial wealth, but it appears many still see politics as a non-business model, a pure economic not for profit realm. This is even when the individual is aware of the bias and leaning of politicians via funding. The individual is key to change, collective understanding is key to longievity.

I am hoping this is a place where the thought process is not muffled by A ruling body unwilling to be disagreed with. Not hear to call names or offend but also not to back down and cower. I can take a different opinion with out thinking the other person doesn't deserve life because I disagree. The world needs free speech. Voices need to be heard. Questions need to be asked. Communication is the key that will unlock the strangle hold of hate that has a tight grip on America. #brothers #patriotvoices

Just be yourself plain and simple. Conflict will naturally arise and we will overcome it.

You have to be dealing with people who are even OPEN to the IDEA that the "other side" can have valid points....good luck!

I'm working on it...
