I do believe most people confuse nationalism with Ultranationalism and it is unfortunate, but I think its possible to be a Nationalistic classical liberal.

Nothing wrong with being a nationalist. A nationalist supports their countrys identity and interests. Like anything, it can be taken too far. I identify as libertarian as it pertains to Thomas Jefferson. The term 'liberal' got hijacked a long time ago; it didn't mean then what it means now.

Do you have an example?

Well this may not be the right thing intellectually to say, but I've always thought the absolute "socialist republics" had an air of extreme nationalism, even though by today's leftist standards that may seem ironic and backward. (USSR, DPRNK, Pre-WW2 Spain).

I avoid the word "nationalism" because of the negative connotations. I consider myself to be a patriotic classical liberal.

I definitely under stand that, and had a hard time convincing myself to click the join button on the group tag, but I thought it was the best way to learn more about it. I also try to use words like nationalistic instead of the "whole sale" Nationalism which may conjure negative images that I don't support. PS Thanks everybody for the feedback.

How can a liberal be a nationalist? Liberals want open borders, want global economy.. the two are oil and water .. it's a word combo like " nice murderer".

You are confusing liberalism with regressive leftism.

Well I don't want an extreme nationalism, however I don't think there is anything wrong with a degree of National pride, as long as you don't use that pride to whip up unnecessary tensions. And I tried to use nationalist in that way, sorry for any confusion.

Additionally, alot of people confuse being classic liberal with progressive.

Regressive leftism has hijacked the liberal narrative. Many of those who claim to be "progressive" are in reality regressive. This is especially true in academia.
