Statehood for the District of Columbia would cement leftist ideology as the underpinning of all future federal laws and Supreme Court opinions on questions of constitutionality. The addition of two new and perpetually guaranteed progressive senators will forever silence the effective voices of millions upon millions of Americans. If D. C. residents' ballot access is that important, return the District, exclusive of actual federal properties and facilities, to the State of Maryland.

Democrats hate history and so they don't know the Missouri Compromise. If DC is admitted as a state without also admitting a conservative state, it means instant secession by conservative states.

I laugh at the call for reparations. If anyone tries to collect reparations, conservative states will secede.

This is domestic abuse. Democrats are using the fact that they live in the same house as Republicans to bully Republicans. The only solution to domestic abuse is to separate everyone and make everyone independent.

Trump: If you want to be a good dealmaker, you have to always be able to walk away from a deal if you think it's bad. Democrats will do everything they can to prevent Republicans from walking away so they can carry on the domestic abuse.

Tyranny of the majority = Domestic abuse

The solution for tyranny of the majority is to minimize federal power. This is precisely what Democrats hate.

Inch by inch they are destroying our nation and our culture.

I'm not sure a federal government would be constitutionally allowed to "seat" in a Washington D.C. that is also a State.

The only reference to a site for the federal government that I can find in the Constitution is in Article I, Section 8. The language grants Congress the exclusive power to legislate over a district that is the seat of a federal government. That language would not preclude, as I understand it at least, a reversion of all parts of the District of Columbia back to the State of Maryland LESS AND EXCEPT those core, non-residential blocks of the District, on which are sited federal facilities.

@kszatmary as I recall my history, DC was square, part of it was given back to Virginia? Civil War era?

@azjc Yes, back to Virginia, but in 1847. The process is called retrocession.

I would be extremely surprised, even in this environment, if D.C. actually ended up being granted statehood.

The times we're in are full of surprises.

Without doubt.
