I find when i debate or talk with friends there is often a buried deep issue for a persons belief, possibly me too. Example, my african american friend votes democrat but will remain in texas due to favorable taxation. My black friend i suspect senses a racism from the republicans that may or may not be there. I think its there but that the people are oblivious and it is largely benign. Example, anne coulter calling herman cain the cool obama or something. He does suspect police harassment too. No clue. I have never lived his life.

It is difficult to truly understand an individual’s political affiliation and ideology until you actually understand their principles. Have you discussed your similar and differing principles with your friend? And how/why they came to believe those principles?

They seem like they're waiting for evidence to make a definitive life choice, sounds like a libertarian in the making to me

Keen observation there.
