Tearing down statues of any kind, no matter what the subject matter, is in essence censoring history. Statues are in many cultures the only thing that remains as markers of who we are and were, and if they do not survive us, our existence is erased. Just consider the shock felt when ISIS tore down the ruins of Aleppo. Now consider all the ancient Greek and Roman statues that we have, and how ignorant we would be if some ideologues had torn them down during prior cultural schisms.
