I dont' want to sound harsh, but where I come from people should be responsible for their own debts. If we want to help with the problem of all this crushing student debt, then we should probably rethink whether or not so many young people really need a traditional college education in the first place, as well as thinking about measures to reduce how expensive it is. Of course, those on the Left want to keep encouraging as many young people to go to college as possible, whether or not they end up actually needing or using the degrees they obtain, since this is their mechanism for indoctrinating them. Then they promise to relieve the debt with the hopes of teaching them to be even more grateful to and dependent upon the state. It's a bad idea. They should be encouraged not to get into debt in the first place, and then, when they do incur debt, they should be expected to pay it like the rest of us.

Oh, and lest some should think I am being totally heartless, I will just say that I spent about a decade as a student myself, seven years full-time and 3 years part time, obtaining a B.A. and an M.Div. that was 104 semester hours of additional work. I know how expensive school is, but I also know that hard work and responsibility enabled me to make it through with minimal debt and to pay off what debt I did have on my own. By God's grace I taught my children the same principles of hard work and responsibility, and two of them have done the same in getting their own college degrees. So, I know full well that it can be done.
