They only say it was not done the same day. They also say it could not have been done with the bail out funds because they have not been disbursed.

Generally speaking, Anglican churches supported the Crown while Presbyterian and other dissenting Protestant churches supported the Revolution. I grew up amidst the southern Cascades in northern California. They're a volcanic chain that extends all the way up into Canada. There are many empty volcanic tubes, left behind as lava retreated. The ones in Mt.Shasta seem to 'breathe' with the mountain as the air warms and cools with the days and seasons (making them useful for free air conditioning in the summer).

I remember reading "The Selling of the President" by Joe McGinnis back in high school. He complained that Richard Nixon was packaged, advertised and sold to the public like any other merchandise. He had a point. Nixon was carefully scripted and kept himself 'on message' in his campaigns. The author related a few instances when Nixon had off-script conversations with people (and did it very well) but he overwhelmingly maintained message discipline. Joe Biden has neither the conversational skills for these off-script moments nor the personal discipline to avoid them. These lead to "viral moments" like the encounter in Michigan. I don't think he realizes the impact these moments have. I don't think he realizes each of those moments is like a hostile, multi-million dollar, ad campaign with millions of viewers. I do think we'll see more of them.

Peter Thiel is reviewing a book about civilizational stagnation and he seems to agree with its thesis. From Boeing 707s to Airbus A380s we're still flying at .8 Mach. We're still driving gasoline cars. Etc, etc. Airliner speed is a function of physics and chemistry not civilizational exhaustion. It takes lot more fuel to fly significantly faster and JP fuel only has so much energy. All that adds up to real money and airlines do like to make money. Likewise, gas powered automobiles are a matter of chemistry and its distribution network. Oil is drilled, pumped out of the ground, transported to refineries, and then transported every corner of the globe. Yet when it's burned as fuel, it releases more energy per unit than it took to accomplish all that processing. As for distribution, when I drive to see the Sandhill Crane migration in northwest Nebraska, there are gas stations in virtually every hamlet on the way. And it only takes about five minutes to fuel my car. Comparing airliners of 1960 to those of today is like comparing muskets to M-16s. New airliners are computers with aerodynamic surfaces, where pilot inputs are interpreted by computer systems. A 1960 Ford Falcon claimed 30 mpg. That was with a manual transmission, no air conditioning and no safety features. As an added feature, you were likely to boil away all the engine coolant going up steep mountains roads on a hot day(and there goes the engine!). My wife's Honda gets 35 mpg, has an automatic transmission, all wheel drive, air conditioning, front and side air bags, and an engine that will last a quarter million miles. This is not technological stagnation.

It's a complicated question. Some companies can go full SJW and profit from it. It certainly worked for Nike. Other companies crash and burn. Gillette and Dicks Sporting Goods (a sporting goods retail chain here in the states.) are examples of the latter. I suppose it depends on who their customer base is. I worked with a doctor whose passions were environmentalism and world travel. He commuted 80 miles a day and he was flying to obscure parts of the world every other month. Quite the carbon footprint for an environmental evangelist. As an aside, he's also the only person I ever treated for dengue fever. Anyway, if the airline's customer base is like the good doctor then they may prosper.

We celebrate Saint Patrick's Day because of the Irish (to say nothing of Halloween). Columbus Day was founded to honor the Italians and Cinco de Mayo for Mexicans. Our favorite fast food is named for a great German city and our favorite condiment is salsa. Our founding fathers rejected democracy (from Greece) a chose a republic (from Rome) because it was more stable. All of this comes out in a distinctively American culture and in Sweden all of this perfectly natural borrowing becomes distinctively Swedish. The most culturally homogeneous modern society I know of is Japan. But their national sport is baseball. Guess where that came from?
