Interesting - 1918 Spanish Flu historical documentary
timon_phocas comments on Apr 6, 2020:
Deeply frightening. Educational but frightening. We do have anti-viral drugs and a hundred year catalog of pharmaceuticals to fall back on. It looks like we'll have a widely accepted treatment suite very soon. We 'should' be able to transition to isolating vulnerable populations, treating acute cases and getting the rest of the country back to work. In 1918, however, quarantine was the only prophylaxis. Eisenhower ran a training camp (I think it was in Pennsylvania) during WWI. He wrote about the Spanish flu in his autobiography, "At Ease, Stories I Tell My Friends." He said he followed his surgeons' advice about quarantines. His camp came through relatively unscathed.

Interestingly enough, they don't talk about mining water on the moon. They factor in the cost of transporting water to the moon, but not the availability of using what's already there. Was the American Revolution a progressive or a conservative movement? What is your interpretation?
timon_phocas comments on Mar 26, 2020:
Howdy @Naomi, I always appreciate it when you open an intellectual jar of worms. The American Revolution was as complicated as any in history. It has been described variously as an economic, ideological, religious, cultural and racial conflict. It was all of these, depending on where you were. The revolution was led by the richest, most prominent men in the colonies. They knew how they had all been economically hobbled by the UK's mercantilist policies. But this hobbling extended to, and angered, many working families. Generally speaking, Anglican churches supported the Crown while Presbyterian and other dissenting Protestant churches supported the Revolution. And yet, for example, George Washington was an Anglican... When Cornwallis launched his campaign in the Carolinas, the Revolution became cultural, with lower class Scots/Irish Piedmonters arrayed against the lowland rich planter class. It became a very bitter guerilla campaign On the frontier, it was settlers against Native Americans. The native tribes were armed, financed and advised by Royal Governors in Canada. This, BTW, did not stop until after the War of 1812. Progressive? Not by today's definition of the word. Pretty radical by the standards of the time.

We had particular problems with a weed called Johnson Grass. It spreads with seeds or by root propagation. Plow it down and cut it up, it would be back next week from the fragments of root still in the soil. Capitalism has the same kind persistence. Even rigidly orthodox communist countries like North Korea can't entirely rid themselves if it.

Yes, they have enforced a draconian quarantine around Wuhan, but only after they allowed 160,000 people a day to fly out China and infect the rest of the world. For over a month. And internal traffic is at least an order of magnitude higher. I would place a higher trust in what Taiwan observes about China's progress in limiting the spread of the Wuhan virus. Another guage of China's epidemic would be shipping. If the factories are really back in business, import and export shipping should jump.

However intricate and well planned, sometimes the production flops. It happened for the Mueller Investigation, it happened at the impeachment. It looks like it may be happening again.

This agrees with what I've read of the writings of people of the times. George Washington had slaves. He considered them inferior workmen to free men as they had no hope of gain from their labors. Jefferson had slaves and was deeply conflicted. He was torn between his ideals and the very practical issue that freeing his slaves would would bankrupt his family. As a general issue, American slavery was at best barely profitable at the time of the Revolution. Many slaveholders (like Jefferson) were anxious to to find a way out of this dilemma. The New York Times 1619 Project is based upon lies and deliberate distortions. It is a vile travesty, little different from the "Protocols of the Elders of Zion."

timon_phocas comments on Mar 18, 2020:
The Marine Corps has always redefined itself for the next mission. It reinvented itself when the Navy changed from sail to iron steamships. The Marines redefined themselves as a force to seize and defend naval bases. Then it became the first Marine division in WWI. Then it became the US State Department's police force in the 1920s. Then they saw the looming war against Japan and the need to develop amphibious warfare; both practically and doctrinally. This is what set the course of the Corps for the next century. The Commandant is seeing another kind of war looming. We have depended on an invincible Navy since we won Guadalcanal. We won't have that in a potential war with China. The Corps will have to help the Navy win superiority. It's a topsy turvey world.

Will Biden's Michigan meltdown be remembered in November?
timon_phocas comments on Mar 12, 2020:
I remember reading "The Selling of the President" by Joe McGinnis back in high school. He complained that Richard Nixon was packaged, advertised and sold to the public like any other merchandise. He had a point. Nixon was carefully scripted and kept himself 'on message' in his campaigns. The author related a few instances when Nixon had off-script conversations with people (and did it very well) but he overwhelmingly maintained message discipline. Joe Biden has neither the conversational skills for these off-script moments nor the personal discipline to avoid them. These lead to "viral moments" like the encounter in Michigan. I don't think he realizes the impact these moments have. I don't think he realizes each of those moments is like a hostile, multi-million dollar, ad campaign with millions of viewers. I do think we'll see more of them.

Peter Thiel: Stagnation and how to get back to the future. [firstthings.com]
timon_phocas comments on Mar 7, 2020:
Peter Thiel is reviewing a book about civilizational stagnation and he seems to agree with its thesis. From Boeing 707s to Airbus A380s we're still flying at .8 Mach. We're still driving gasoline cars. Etc, etc. Airliner speed is a function of physics and chemistry not civilizational exhaustion. It takes lot more fuel to fly significantly faster and JP fuel only has so much energy. All that adds up to real money and airlines do like to make money. Likewise, gas powered automobiles are a matter of chemistry and its distribution network. Oil is drilled, pumped out of the ground, transported to refineries, and then transported every corner of the globe. Yet when it's burned as fuel, it releases more energy per unit than it took to accomplish all that processing. As for distribution, when I drive to see the Sandhill Crane migration in northwest Nebraska, there are gas stations in virtually every hamlet on the way. And it only takes about five minutes to fuel my car. Comparing airliners of 1960 to those of today is like comparing muskets to M-16s. New airliners are computers with aerodynamic surfaces, where pilot inputs are interpreted by computer systems. A 1960 Ford Falcon claimed 30 mpg. That was with a manual transmission, no air conditioning and no safety features. As an added feature, you were likely to boil away all the engine coolant going up steep mountains roads on a hot day(and there goes the engine!). My wife's Honda gets 35 mpg, has an automatic transmission, all wheel drive, air conditioning, front and side air bags, and an engine that will last a quarter million miles. This is not technological stagnation.

"anti-science" Theories are useful if they accurately describe current conditions and predict future conditions This is not just an aspect of scientific methods, but a millenia old principle. Deuteronomy 18:22 If what a prophet proclaims in the name of the LORD does not take place or come true, that is a message the LORD has not spoken. That prophet has spoken presumptuously, so do not be alarmed. One of the advantages in getting old is remembering all the apocalyptic predictions that never came true. Rachel Carlson, Paul Erlich, Club of Rome, Al Gore, and now Greta Thunberg all promised ecological disaster in the fuzzy future unless we immediately, and radically, changed. All of those fuzzy futures have come and gone. We're still here. Maybe they should check the warrantees on their crystal balls. But Greta Thunberg! Her fuzzy future hasn't arrived yet. So we're supposed to believe her as though she was a modern Moses. Or maybe, just maybe, she is one of those prophets Moses told us not to fear.

Point one is that the Taliban cannot be trusted, and Pakistan cannot be trusted. Keeping Afghanistan as a puppet state is one of Pakistan's primary goals. Taqiyya, lying to kafirs to advance Islam, is encouraged in Islam. Point two is that it is hideously expensive to wage an American style war in Afghanistan. All weapons and ammunition are shipped to Diego Garcia and then airlifted to Afghanistan. Other supplies can be shipped to Karachi and then trucked over the Pakistani road net (with much pilferage). It can also be shipped to Russia and then use the creaking Russian rail network to Afghanistan's border. Then it's off loaded to Afghan trucks. What I think will happen is the Taliban will take over Afghanistan at Pakistan's behest. Pakistan is a client state of China. The USGS reported that Afghanistan had a trillion dollars of untapped mineral resources. This report was issued in Bush 2's administration. I think China will move into Afghanistan for those resources. They will do to the Afghans what they are doing to to the Uighurs. They will be able to do this because they're a dictatorship, because they have 1.5 billion people, because they're close and because they'll have direct rail links. In the end, America's real strategic interest in Afghanistan is to prevent it from becoming another unhindered terrorist base. I think China will accomplish that.

Haha! I though he was brutally honest.

It's a complicated question. Some companies can go full SJW and profit from it. It certainly worked for Nike. Other companies crash and burn. Gillette and Dicks Sporting Goods (a sporting goods retail chain here in the states.) are examples of the latter. I suppose it depends on who their customer base is. I worked with a doctor whose passions were environmentalism and world travel. He commuted 80 miles a day and he was flying to obscure parts of the world every other month. Quite the carbon footprint for an environmental evangelist. As an aside, he's also the only person I ever treated for dengue fever. Anyway, if the airline's customer base is like the good doctor then they may prosper.

timon_phocas comments on Feb 17, 2020:
This highlights the moral arrogance of the Left. They hate US mining, which is highly regulated. They're perfectly happy, however, to let third-world kids shovel muck 12 hours a day to get the same ore in the Congo. The Left protests offshore drilling, as long as it's off the US. They say we must protect our delicate coastal ecosystems. They don't say squat, however, about Nigerian offshore drilling and delicate Nigerian coastal ecosystems. Oh yes. They tweet their righteous indignation on their $1,500 iPhones while driving their SUVs.

The media are in a tough position. After all, it's tough to figure out your opinions are out of the mainstream when all the other lemmings are running in the same direction.
Can we add Manafort to the 4 men Mueller railroaded in Boston?
timon_phocas comments on Feb 14, 2020:
The Mueller investigation's purpose was not to uncover evidence of collusion between the Russians and the Trump Campaign. Its purpose was to delay investigation of the Justice Department, State Department and intelligence agencies for grossly illegal and unconstitutional actions in 2016. Any Trump associates they could railroad into prison was a bonus.
The Democrats forced this idea once before .

Car thieves muggers, and rapists get less time than this. A friend of mine was raped, murdered and stuffed into a well by someone just released from prison after seven years for second degree murder. The sentence recommendation was not for justice, it was revenge for being associated with Trump.
i just got this notice this morning i am banned for 7 days for this.
timon_phocas comments on Feb 12, 2020:
Well, six actually (but then He took Saturday off to watch Notre Dame play football). If you use all seven days, you'll have time to make something really impressive!
Interesting, no?
timon_phocas comments on Feb 12, 2020:
So my first question becomes what is the cause and what is the effect? The article itself disproves its title. Respect for human rights, not secularism, went in parallel with prosperity. The great leap in prosperity started with the industrial revolution. This began in England, during the time of the Great Awakening, the Methodist movement under leadership of the Wesley brothers, and the subsequent reform movements led by men like Wilberforce. Hardly secularism.

timon_phocas comments on Feb 12, 2020:
So what? John Donne famously wrote that "no man is an island." That can be said of cultures as well. In America we get Christmas from the Germans and British. We celebrate Saint Patrick's Day because of the Irish (to say nothing of Halloween). Columbus Day was founded to honor the Italians and Cinco de Mayo for Mexicans. Our favorite fast food is named for a great German city and our favorite condiment is salsa. Our founding fathers rejected democracy (from Greece) a chose a republic (from Rome) because it was more stable. All of this comes out in a distinctively American culture and in Sweden all of this perfectly natural borrowing becomes distinctively Swedish. The most culturally homogeneous modern society I know of is Japan. But their national sport is baseball. Guess where that came from?
As expected, Joe Biden’s campaign has been unraveling slowly, by increments, and then, all at ...
timon_phocas comments on Feb 12, 2020:
Howdy @Edgework, Great column. I knew any Biden campaign would collapse from thousands of self-inflicted cuts. He postures as a man of destiny, but he's actually rhetorically eviscerating himself. It's kind of painful to watch. Like the emperor of fable, this Vice President has no clothes.
