Is beauty a gateway to the divine?
timon_phocas comments on Aug 7, 2020:
One of the first lessons in classical logic is that logic does not equal truth. Logic just means an argument is internally consistent. Likewise, God is beautiful, but beauty does not necessarily mean divine. It just means something is attractive. Hitler's great rallies were designed to be beautiful. Leni Reifenstal's movies were beautiful. They were far from divine. Hugh Hefner's magazines were beautiful, they led to anywhere but the divine.

timon_phocas comments on Aug 6, 2020:
If the police aren't allowed to do their jobs, our streets will devolve into jungle justice. Eventually Minnesotans are going to remember how they handled the James Gang in Northfield. The James Gang tried to rob their two banks. The citizens there shot the James boys to pieces. Same thing happened to the Dalton Gang in Coffeyville, Kansas. America is an armed society. Leftists had best beware of that.

I'm sorry if I trigger you, but Canada is dead.
timon_phocas comments on Aug 5, 2020:
I disagree. Canada has a proud history. They moved west the same way the Americans did, but they avoided the numerous Indian Wars that dotted the American frontier. Justice was more even handed that on the American frontier for one thing. When treaties obligated the government to deliver goods and services, the government delivered. Not only that, but Canada never had the entrenched, immensely profitable, system of slavery the US had to wrestle with. Canada did not have the explosive growth of the US, but its economic growth was very impressive. Its contribution to Commonwealth power in the 20th century was very impressive. Canada suffers from the same problem as the US. Its history and traditions are under systematic attack. It is a good history and they are proud traditions. Canadians just need to remember them.

I get annoyed at the police fairly frequently. Like when law enforcement is treated as a revenue stream, for instance. There are times when I'm outraged. Like when police departments act as though they are sovereign untouchables. There was a time, however, when a gang moved into my neighborhood. My cars were broken into and stereos stolen. Things were stolen from my back porch. My house was burgeled and a car stolen. It was a bad 18 months. I learned that my city of 120 thousand had the same number of police as it did in 1970 when it had 35 thousand. I complained to the mayor. I wanted more cops. I wanted more protection. And that, in microcosm, is why conservatives support the police. I can theoretically defend myself. But that is all I would be able to do. It would take all my time. I need the police so I can live in a non-Hobbesian world. We all do.

Why do many Leftists fervently believe Trump is a reincarnation of Hitler?
timon_phocas comments on Jul 26, 2020:
The Left has been very 'liberal' about bestowing fascist accusations on their opponents. The ashes of WWII were barely cool when Harry Truman called Dewey and Republicans "front men for fascists." Eisenhower escaped this accusation. He was, after all, the leader of the armies that crushed fascism. Every other Republican president has been excoriated as a racist, fascist warmonger, and (inevitably) Hitler-like. There was a peak of vituperation with Nixon (Vietnam War and Watergate). There was another with George W. Bush (Iraq War) and today's raging creshendo with Trump.

Protestantism’s troubling history with white supremacy in the US [theconversation.com]
timon_phocas comments on Jul 19, 2020:
The Southern Baptists split from the American Baptists in 1840 over slavery. Joseph Smith was racist and so the Mormans carried that forward into 1970s. But those are the only things I remember that were truly racist from a denomination. The writer paints an overly broad brush when he accuses all of American Protestantism. Many denominations were Abolitionists. Many were very liberal. The writer also conflates cultural assumptions and biases with religious affiliation. People acting on their biases would not be following the teachings of their denominations. And certainly not the teaching from the Bible.

Heck, there are whole football programs that don't have that. We were not equal. For good reason. I was a mediocre swimmer, he was a stellar football player. Anthony Davis went on to the CFL and then NFL. Today he's a successful businessman in Southern California. My swimming was really useful in Recon work in the Corps. In California, term limits moved Willie Brown from Speaker of the House for-life to San Francisco mayor-for-life. Same machine, different position. It's the machine that counts, and the machine lives on regardless.

A few observations. The US House of Representatives is controlled by Nancy Pelosi, a fervent "Orange Man Bad" proponent. If Trump wants more space exploration, then she's vociferously against it. It could also reflect anger at the agonizingly slow progress of NASA's SLS project. It took about $40 billion and 8 years to land on the moon. The SLS has taken $30 billion and 15 years and has yet to launch a single rocket. It's a risk averse welfare program for Boeing. I don't like "Orange Man Bad," but (as far as the SLS goes) "Orange Rocket Bad" is starting to sound pretty good.

The body's genetic gender is imprinted into every cell with a nucleus. It's wired into brain structure. It's a controlling factor in the endocrine system. It controls development of the musculoskeletal systems. You can alter some of this complex, suble physiology by flooding the body with estrogen, but the body will reassert its genetic gender whenever the flood stops.

It starts out with a story about a scrappy start up (Grumman) beating Boeing for a contract for a naval fighter in the early 1930s. Gosh, doesn't that sound familiar?

From the time of Circus Maximus to twenry-first century America, games have been a mix of athleticism and patriotism. They were always a reaffirmation of audience and culture. The NFL suffered significant losses when they allowed the protest culture to invade their programs. They recovered their audience when protests went away. Now the sports leagues are enthusiastically endorsing the protest culture. Losses will follow. Maybe athletic contracts should renegotiated to reflect audience share. When athletic entertainers realize radical outbursts hurt them financially, perhaps they'll restrain themselves. As Michael Jordan famously said, "White people buy shoes, too."
What would you do, if anything, to change the criminal justice system?

Police and prosecutor's seem to be more interested in scalps than justice. My son was arrested as suspect. It was an out of the blue event for my son, he was on his way to a medical appointment. The arresting officer was a contract with Teller County Sheriff's Department. He had a background with other agencies that included many sketchy arrests and tampered evidence. By the time it came to court the arresting officer was gone. Fortunately my son married an attorney and Teller County Sheriff's Department was not prepared for her vigorous defense. The fact that he was a medically retired combat veteran, in nursing school, and innocent to boot made for bad optics. They dropped the case.

Laxitive poisoning by Nazis? Far more likely they're having a rash of diarrhea because nobody is washing when they're preparing food. Add in no toilet discipline and you have a recipe for mass diarrhea.

A lot of weird, convoluted history behind the papacy. One of the odd little quirks is the smallest country in the world, the Knights of Malta, whose sovereign territory consists of one house in Rome.

FT: China's mix of pride and paranoia. [ft.com]
timon_phocas comments on Jun 14, 2020:
What is China up to? From Hong Kong to Taiwan and from the South China Sea to the Indian border, the Chinese government, led by President Xi Jinping, is pursuing more aggressive policies. There is growing concern about Beijing’s behaviour, not just in Washington but in Delhi, London, Tokyo and Canberra. The Chinese government may feel that coronavirus makes this a good time to act, while the world is looking away. The turmoil on the streets of America has further divided and distracted the west. But democracies cannot afford to lose focus on east Asia. A new global crisis could easily break out there, with even graver long-term consequences than the pandemic. Beijing’s growing assertiveness reflects both pride and paranoia. After 40 years of rapid economic growth, China is now — by some measures — the world’s largest economy. Its navy has more warships and submarines than that of the US. Its internet bubbles with nationalistic chatter about the inexorable rise of the nation. The biggest grossing film in Chinese history is Wolf Warrior 2 — a Rambo-style action movie, released in 2017, that features heroic Chinese soldiers battling against mercenaries, led by a racist American. A promotional poster for the film featured the slogan, “Anyone who insults China — no matter how remote — must be exterminated”. When Chinese diplomats respond to criticism of Beijing with threats and insults, they are often said to be practising “wolf-warrior diplomacy." But, alongside the pride, there are plenty of reasons for paranoia at the top levels of government in Beijing. The past 12 months have presented Mr Xi with an unprecedented range of threats and challenges. The pandemic has seen China widely accused of responsibility for a global calamity. A regime that used to believe it needed 8 per cent growth a year to maintain social stability now has to deal with a deep economic contraction — compounded by a trade war with the US. Pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong have continued for more than a year and represent a severe challenge to Communist party authority. And in January, Taiwan’s president, Tsai Ing-wen, won a crushing re-election victory — a humiliation for Beijing, which had worked hard to undermine her. All of this seems to be creating a siege mentality in government. In response, Beijing has intensified its appeal to nationalism. The propaganda goal is to rally the people against external threats and deflect anger about Covid-19 outwards, to the world beyond China Beijing’s external and internal policies are increasingly bold and aggressive. A new national security law is to be imposed on Hong Kong, which threatens to inflict mainland-style censorship on a free city. Military exercises and rhetoric aimed at...

Jefferson's ideal of a yeomen's republic is entrancing, but it would also be bankrupt. So would our country without the coastal corridors. I think large swathes of leftist territory may be having a "Giuliani Moment." They've not only read about the results of leftist policies, they've seen them up close and personal. We'll see.

I would also add that the Greek/Roman pantheon offered little to ordinary people. At best it was a business arrangement, quid pro quo. It can also be described as continually paying off a spiritual mafia. A personal relationship with a God who loved you, who sent his son to die for you, that was unthinkable in Greek/Roman spiritual worldview.

This was stupid on the part of the Chinese. Major Wang was at UC San Francisco learning laboratory techniques. They could have gotten that information from internet searches. Yet they expose personnel to lengthly imprisonment. Curious.
In an era of inclusively, is it time for the Pride parade to ALSO celebrate heterosexuality?
timon_phocas comments on Jun 13, 2020:
On one hand, the LGBT Pride campaigns never had inclusivity as a goal. Their purpose was to deny that there was such a thing as "normal." To use Kurt Schlichter's term, they will never include "normals" in their movement. OTOH, I think the libertarian streak in the Conservative movement has great appeal to to anyone who wants what they do between their sheets to be a matter of indifference to the wider society.
