The article says it "benefits heavily weighted towards lower - and middle income Americans --" but never says what those benefits are (except for a $1,400 check). A little advertised part of the bill is a $350 per month direct payment for each child under 6 and $250 for children between 6 and 17. There's talk of making this payment permanent. This might spark a massive increase in private schooling (and won't that make the teacher's unions joyful). Blue states and cities gutted their tax bases and ran up massive deficits. The stimulus bill pours rivers of money into them. These rivers of cash dwarf everything else in the bill.

Howdy @Krunoslav, Every business (with the possible exception of PayPal) Musk started is absolutely dependent on market distorting government subsidies or the government as customer. Solar City depends on regulations forcing utilities to buy electricity from rooftop solar panels and tax subsidies for installation. The Boring Company only builds tunnels for governments. Tesla depends on $7,000 tax subsidies for each car sold. SpaceX depends on NASA grants and government launch service purchases. Commercial launch services are heating up, however, a lot of those launches are for foreign governments. Even Starlink could never be approved without massive federal government support. Who else could approve a constellation of tens of thousands of satellites?

Howdy @Naomi, The Food and Drug Administration regulates formulations of prescription drugs. The rules they force pharmaceutical companies to undertake are, rigorous, exhaustive and time consuming. They include testing for purpose, dosage, side effects, patient tolerances. They do save lives, but a lot of them are for CYA, to prevent embarrassing the FDA. The FDA test regime was designed in the early to mid 20th century. Half a century later, they're out of date. So yes, the normal test regime was waived for the COVID emergency. The knowledge base we had for developing Salk's polio vaccine was primitive by today's standards. That inherently improves safety. According to what I read, each vaccine was tested on approximately ten thousand people before being approved.

Howdy @eschatologyguy, Putin has an interesting back story. He was a latchkey child. His parents worked full time in the KGB. So he spent his afternoons, and sometimes nights, with a Jewish family down the hall from his parent's apartment. As a result, he is free of that broad streak of anti-semitism that runs through Russia. Under Putin, Israel and Russia have a tacit alliance in Syria. Syria is a Russian ally. Israel doesn't attack Russian assets. When Israel attacks Syrian assets that Iran has appropriated, then it warns Russia that it's coming so they can evacuate their personnel. When Israel attacks purely Iranian assets in Syria then they warn the Russians where they will be coming to protect any Russian assets in the area. Russia does not pass this warning on to Iranian forces. It's a strange War going on in Syria.

A few things about the Marshall Plan. Europe was utterly prostrate after WWII. They had a chicken and egg program. They wanted to grow economically, but they lacked the means. No factories to build products, no rail nets to move raw materials or products, no harbors to ship the products. They had populations that wanted to work, but there was nothing to work at. The only place to buy the capital goods was the US, but they didn't have the money to buy them. The US had a parallel problem. We were making the capital goods but nobody had the money to buy them. The Marshall Plan provided the money and it solved both the US and European problems. Winston Churchill called it "the most unsordid act in history," but there was a whole lot of self interest in the generosity.

timon_phocas comments on Feb 24, 2021:
Prosecutors Offer Plea Deal to NYC Lawyers Who Firebombed Police Vehicle The leftwing attorneys are accused of distributing Molotov cocktails to fellow protesters Federal prosecutors have offered a plea deal to two New York City lawyers accused of fire-bombing a police car and distributing Molotov cocktails to rioters during protests that followed the death of George Floyd last summer. The defendants, Colinford Mattis and Urooj Rahman, were offered plea bargains on Feb. 11, according to a letter prosecutors submitted to a federal trial court on Saturday. Prosecutors and defense lawyers were set to participate in a status hearing on Tuesday morning, which was rescheduled in light of the new developments. The parties are engaged in plea negotiations which they believe are likely to result in a disposition of this case without trial," the letter reads. The details of the offer are not public and may change as attorneys negotiate. The letter is signed by Mark Lesko, the number two federal prosecutor for the district covering Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, and Long Island. Mattis is a Princeton-educated corporate lawyer and Rahman attained pretrial release with the help of a former Obama administration official. She's also retained a top defense lawyer to represent her in court. Friendly reports from NPR and BuzzFeed News cast the pair as "idealistic attorneys hoping to change the world," who were "living the American dream their immigrant parents had aspired for them." Whether the prospective deal includes guilty pleas to felony charges will have significant professional consequences for Mattis and Rahman. Lawyers in New York state are automatically disbarred if they are convicted of a felony. Mattis was an associate at Pryor Cashman, a midsize corporate law firm. Rahman was a public interest lawyer practicing with Bronx Legal Services. Biden-appointed U.S. attorney will continue prosecuting the case against Mattis and Rahman. Some legal observers have questioned whether the case is appropriate for federal court, since it involves purely local conduct. The acting U.S. attorney supervising their case, Seth DuCharme, advised senior officials in the Trump Justice Department before former attorney general William Barr picked him to serve as acting U.S. attorney last summer. A spokesperson declined to comment as to when DuCharme will step down, though it doesn't appear he will be among those U.S. attorneys who will resign at the end of this month at President Joe Biden's request. Surveillance video captured Rahman lighting a Molotov cocktail and tossing it into an empty police vehicle in May 2020. She then retreated to a minivan, which Mattis drove, and fled the scene. A witness told authorities that Rahman tried to distribute...

Are women aware of the risks of postponing having children?
timon_phocas comments on Feb 11, 2021:
Fertility lowers significantly after thirty. If you postpone conception it gets progressively harder to achieve.

I think it's really appropriate. After all, the Amazon building is right next to Washington D.C.

Every public event has expenses. Sound systems, stages, flag displays, jumbotrons, portapotties, etc. Of course the Trump campaign paid for these things. This does nothing to alter the fact that thugs were breaking into to the Capitol before Trump even began speaking. So it was not a case of incitement.
Well, does this help anything?

The NBA uses universities as their farm leagues. Universities are secular seminaries for Leftists. Black players coming out of these seminaries would agree with Mark Cuban's action. The fan base, however, is another kettle of fish altogether.

Indoctrination of young minds is so toxic.

Howdy @Naomi, George M. Cohan, fabulous showman of the early 20th century, visited England and said, "they've got so much history here. If I had been born here, I'd have killed myself just waving the flag " Perhaps, just perhaps, the lad was easily indoctrinated because he was never taught how great England's history really is. When you don't believe in anything you're an easy target for someone who is a passionate believer.

This reminds me of the '75 film, Rollerball, starring James Caan. A cabal of corporations runs the world and Rollerball is the sport they promote. James Caan's character is told to retire because the unwashed masses think he's a hero. He doesn't retire and the corporate bosses try to break him, but he wins anyway. I think we're seeing a bit of the Rollerball ethos play out in this Superbowl. Interesting.
When I read through the OT, I sometimes think, how can they be so stupid?

Amen, @Familyman777, I've always thought the children of the Exodus are an apt metaphor for the Christian's life. It's what all of us have to do. Get up every morning and follow the Pillar of Fire. And if they, with the presence of the Almighty staring them in the face, could bicker and grumble (and worse), then so will I. Keep me looking at You, Father God.

There is no white supremacist problem in the military. The US military pledges its loyalty to the Constitution of the United States. It obeys every lawful order of the US President and its duly appointed subordinate commanders. Trying to force the military into a leftist ideological mold will destroy its combat effectiveness and its recruiting. My family has served in the US military since at least the 1870s. But if it becomes a leftist palace guard then I'll tell my grandkids to end the tradition.

They're bragging about how they distorted the election for their own ends. They're bragging about how they worked in concert to deny media access to any voices but their own. They're bragging that rich, connected elites installed a regime friendly to their own financial interests. The word for that is fascism.

We've been told that human industrial civization causes global warming for at least a generation now. We have a chance to measure the effects of a dramatic decrease in industrial emissions for the first time and find out that the **decrease** caused accelerated global warming. A paradox.
