Many aircraft and tanks are equipped with anti-missile missiles, flares, and other defenses. The way to kill such an aircraft is to launch many missiles at it at the same time.
You want an arsenal of fancy expensive missiles, to shoot at the enemy's best aircraft. You also want a vast number of cheap missiles so that you can swarm enemy aircraft.
