Universal inborn racism?
govols comments on Aug 15, 2020:
The ideas involved are both deep and ancient, and shallow and "modern." The deep and ancient seem to me to be also the more subtle and comprehensive. The ancients had a totally different world than we do, but understood cause and effect, and by the 500-400s BC were looking for causes more worldly than "The gods did it." I'm trying to get through Plato's Republic and through it follow the search by Socrates for the meaning of Justice. In it, he and his friends are building a mental model of a society that would by it very form result in a people constructed by intent to be at least absent of injustice. It's a screwed up society by our conceptions, but it pretends toward much of what the progressive project is attempting today. Of the shallow and "modern" ideas that're rejected by ancient assumption, two big ones are "blank slate" and "noble savage." Like, they formulate a fiction that divides people into iron, bronze, silver or gold souls, each with different potentialities. Iron souls are never going to make great leaders. The potential of gold souls is wasted when allowed or forced to slave away at the tasks more suited to an iron or bronze soul. The prevent the injustice of poor leadership of the city as a whole, those unfit to lead are fed a fiction to make them proud of the contributions that they can and do make. Also, and just as, or more importantly, it becomes critical to watch the children of each generation for indications of mis-born souls--souls born to stations to which they poorly suited. They actually design for identifying malicious or magnanimous mutants within the various classes and provide for upward and downward mobility. We're not blank slates; we must be trained to the benefit of the social good, but only toward maximizing each member of society given the nature to which each is individually vested. Individual natural ability rather than lineage. The iron or bronze soul can't be transformed by education and social alchemy into a golden soul with the natural nobility that could be developed into a leader with a great concern for justice. They had the good sense to understand that we ARE constructed by society, AND we also have individual natures, AND we have universal desires and needs, AND that in a just society there must be limits upon some while others must be elevated. They also understood some degree of complexity was required, and provided for the fact that a functional society had to have traders, had to have merchants, craftsmen, artist, farmers, teachers, soldiers, leaders... It needed institutions designed to identify the potential of individuals and to instill into the citizenry a certain pride of place stemming from a real institutional effort to elevate each to his fullest possible station. To bring this ...
And now, for something completely different...

So, does current year suggest that neither 1984 nor Brave New World were ever going to be expressed in reality? If written today, one might portray both visions simultaneously, somewhere along the lines of what? 80% of us living happily in Brave New World, and all but the smallest portion living out the extremes of 1984. Mos of the early dissenters would be turned by some special attention and some free shit, wouldn't we?

[foxnews.com] Why do so many atheist feel the need to force others to change?
govols comments on Sep 26, 2019:
It's a puzzle to me too. I'm not exactly an atheist, but I've dabbled in it almost all of my life. Most of the time I don't join public prayers to which I'm party, but I have generally made a practice of quietly meditating on the items brought up by the performer. A few things I've pondered over the years: The simple prayer of praise, delivered humbly to an authority on high, and how the person or group who would sue to prevent such a public performance would do so through an appeal to a powerful secular authority. The appeal to "give us this day...(the grace required) to forgive our trespassers," and how many of us struggle with that feat, and fail. The game day prayer to grant safe conduct, glory worthy grit and determination on behalf of our team and the community who support us, humility toward and respect for the opposing team and their fans, and basically a wish for this game and our play to reflect the way we would hope to live our lives and the way we would hope our communities would provide a fair and sporting environment in which to do so. The public performance of God praise has never been an intrusion for me, even at my least believing moments, because it is the way of my culture and a ritual worth sharing if one approaches from a perspective of awe at the blessings that culture itself provides.

On atheism, yes, many have really struggled with the fact that belief is fundamental to western morality, and that practice of religious faith and traditions is part of how the culture has historically grown and propagated across time. The big question for atheists is "Yeah, and now what the hell do we do?" There are many atheists who are attempting to demystify morals and ethics in a way that can serve as a practical "cult" to stand in stead for faith. Whether God revealed Himself to the ancients or the ancients invented Him to explain the world and to instruct social norms, I'm not sure that matters where the above is concerned. I'm simply unconvinced that any of us are bright enough to outsmart God whether He's the real deal or the sum of the moral and pragmatic wisdom of thousands of generations of humans, being, together.

govols comments on Nov 20, 2019:
If I set aside my prejudice (to the extent that's possible) I look at Marx as a step that was later taken as Truth. His was an "Enlightenment" criticism of previous theory. Like, he was a materialist, and on some level thought science and reason could explain society, culture, history, economics...everything. He saw flaws in "capitalism," flaws he understood to be fatal, and made a cut at what would follow. Empirically, capitalism IS flawed. It does cause stratification, and the losers DO GET PISSED about it. Damn...rabbit holes... His idea of a peasant revolution was off because the vast majority of workers were empirically better off than they had been as serfs. Still, when is the last time YOU consumed something that you created through your job? His description of alienation was pretty close. The notion that arose later that that his was mostly a classification error, that the wealth stratification wasn't the issue so much as power/oppression dynamics is a decent synthesis between prosperity lifting all boats and modern uber-wealth. What seems to screw it up is the complexity of production, distribution, and disparate demands and supplies across all markets and eras. His idea of a social organization to manage the complexities involved simply don't compare to the massive super-computer that the invisible hand of the market manages to be. Supply and demand actually works, to a decent degree, but every effort to centrally manage complex human economic and social systems from the top down have failed where ever and when ever tried.

govols comments on May 28, 2019:
Part of the reason there even IS a God is that we can't imagine the complexity of our experience without there being one (or more). God said, "I am." We humans can't really conceptualize that notion. Everything has a beginning, a cause, a purpose...to even pretend to imagine a form of being that exists outside of our own limitations is simply that: pretense. Some things are incomprehensible, and that's the simplicity of God. We say, "WHY am I here?" God says, "I am." That's the difference between complexity and simplicity, and a manner of being that we mere mortals can't quite wrap our heads around.

Tolerance is the self destructive assertion that we'll resist the urge to witch hunt if you'll patrol your witches. You degenerates control your revolutionaries, we'll control our reactionaries. govols comments on May 21, 2019:
These conversations are revolving around several broad ways of perceiving the world. Sam has this weird faith in human reason and the ability of science to eventually know the world well enough that we can reason our way to a moral truth that is almost physically real. Jordan and I disagree, I think in part because we both see that the human animal, given the reality of both bio- and psychological- diversity, a hell of a lot of us won't ever be able to pull off such a moral foundation intellectually. With Bret, the obvious reality that much off our moral landscape is adaptation, within both individuals and societies, to problems associated as much with the human-interaction-environment as with survival of the individual, community, and their offspring. I think Bret sees something I see. Jordan is right that the stories tell something important and that many people will need such stories as a short cut to reasoned ethic development. Sam is possibly right that universal ethical and moral thought might be able to enunciate the ideas better than ancient stories, but Bret and Jordan see a reality in which the only way such ideas could be widely disseminated and adopted would be through emotional (irrational) persuasion. There--a few thoughts to kick things off.

If evolutionary theory is remotely true, altruism arose probably because small parties within a species survived more reliably than other populations through a certain amount of cooperation. BUT there would still have been competition between populations and between species, and while "in-group" altruism promotes greater cooperation, it does so in part as a means by which one population out-survives the out-group in the greater competition. Altruism doesn't "scale up" because humans remain evolutionarily competitive within and between population. There is no "brotherhood of Man."
