Of course their self determination might include a certain reverence for the larger power(s) most likely to affect them. But that is their business. The principles on which the US was founded include the principle of self determination. The US does not have the right to impose our preference of Constitutional Representative Republicanism on other nations - especially those culturally incompatible with such ideas. In addition, Americans are humans, just like humans everywhere. We enjoy the happy accident of the Constitution, massive resources, and for most of our history were growing. The fact that we had a civil war, terrible depressions, and awful corruption, like the McCarthy era prove that there is nothing fundamentally better about Americans. Finally, even though the US might prefer stability, many other non Constitutional Republics, have no interest in any kind of Global order. Kotkin seems unaware of his own biases about these things.

NATOs only mandate was to contain the Soviet Union to avoid war with the Soviet Union, which disappeared in 1991. Doesn't it seem that NATO has forgotten its original purpose? Now it is destabilizing the area instead of stabilizing, and giving aid and comfort to Russia's combatants. I think its pretty clear that NATO is the bad guy. And what the morons in NATO have done is provide an opportunity to Putin to neutralize them. I am unsympathetic that NATO is about to disappear, and especially disgusted that they are causing the loss of innocent life in Ukraine. And those who have been fooled by this into supporting NATO, and are adding weapons to the conflict deserve a special kind of contempt.
