You know that right wing conspiracy theory that the China virus came from a lab in China?
Lightman comments on May 29, 2021:
# The key questions that China still refuses to answer By Madeleine Spence, Matthew Campbell May 30, 2021 What really happened in the Wuhan laboratory and why does China fear the truth? These are the questions the world is seeking answers to. ## 1. What really happened in the Wuhan laboratory? The idea that the virus, which has killed more than 3.5 million people and wreaked havoc in the global economy, may have emerged from the internationally renowned Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV), rather than through human contact with an infected animal, was once dismissed as a conspiracy theory. When the idea of a laboratory leak was aired last year it was linked by some of its proponents with claims that the virus was a product of a Chinese biological-warfare program, but no scientific or intelligence evidence was produced. China’s initial indication that the virus emerged from a Wuhan food market was seen as more plausible - and its subsequent efforts to transfer blame to some unidentified foreign source reinforced the assumption that the market was the source. Since then, however, greater awareness of the WIV’s research into bat viruses — including one almost identical to the pandemic’s Sars-Covid-2 — has reawakened attention to the possibility that there was an accidental leak from the laboratory. At the same time, China’s own efforts to show proof of another source for the virus have failed, and its increasingly shrill denials about the WIV have helped to boost suspicions that it is trying to cover up a laboratory leak. “China’s ongoing cover-up since day one is only adding fuel to the fire,” said Jamie Metzl, adviser to the World Health Organisation (WHO) on human genome editing and a senior fellow with the Atlantic Council think tank. “Since the earliest days following the outbreak China has destroyed samples, hidden records, imprisoned citizen journalists.” President Biden has given US intelligence agencies 90 days to try to penetrate this secrecy and find out how the virus emerged. They are appealing to western allies, including Britain, for help through a mixture of intelligence work and further scientific investigation. But experts are sceptical about their chances of finding a text message, email or document proving a lab leak — let alone a smoking test tube. ## 2. Why does China fear the truth? China severely restricted the scope of a WHO investigation in Wuhan this year. The team was denied access to vital information and personnel and, with no evidence to the contrary, concluded that a leak from the WIV was “extremely unlikely”. “It was more like a Disneyland tour,” said Larry Gostin, director of the WHO’s Collaborating Centre on National and Global Health Law. Even the WHO’s...

In other words, the U.S. accuses him of instructing her to hack the Pentagon, and offering to help. This is not an undertaking any working journalist should attempt without knowing that the immediate consequence will be the loss of his job, his reputation, and his freedom at the hands of the FBI. * *I might further direct you to Assange’s own unique brand of journalism, when he could still be said to be practicing it. Releasing U.S. diplomatic communiqués that named foreigners living in conflict zones or authoritarian states and liaising with American officials was always going to require thorough vetting and redaction, lest those foreigners be put in harm’s way. Assange did not care—he wanted their names published, according to Luke Harding and David Leigh in WikiLeaks: Inside Julian Assange’s War on Secrecy. As they recount the story, when Guardian journalists working with WikiLeaks to disseminate its tranche of U.S. secrets tried to explain to Assange why it was morally reprehensible to publish the names of Afghans working with American troops, Assange replied: “Well, they’re informants. So, if they get killed, they’ve got it coming to them. They deserve it.” (Assange denied the account; the names, in the end, were not published in The Guardian, although some were by WikiLeaks in its own dump of the files.)*

You know that right wing conspiracy theory that the China virus came from a lab in China?
Lightman comments on May 28, 2021:
# How irrational politics muted plausible Covid leak theory Chris Kenny May 29, 2021 Two things are responsible for the statewide lockdown in Victoria, the fourth lockdown in the state in just over a year. One is the incompetence and cowardice of its state government; the other is a coronavirus, invisible to the naked eye and of uncertain origins, first noticed in humans 18 months ago. The illness caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) was first notified to the World Health Organisation by China on New Year’s Eve 2019. Known the world over now as Covid-19, the disease had been identified in the city of Wuhan, in Hubei Province, in the preceding weeks or months and, to the time of writing, had infected more than 170 million people worldwide, causing more than 3.5 million deaths and inducing a global upheaval and recession. This trauma raises many difficult questions about current dilemmas and future challenges, but the answers hinge largely on one crucial question about the past. **How did it start?** **We have seen far too little progress on solving this scientific riddle for two reasons that stem from either side of a growing global schism, the cold war of our time. Transparency has been stifled both by the authoritarian opaqueness of Chinese communism, and a jaundiced incuriosity stemming from the hyper-partisan politics of western liberal democracies.** **In short, the secrets of Wuhan have been hidden by the firm hand of Xi Jinping, and the determined denial of the Trump Derangement Syndrome. Only now that Trump is off the stage have the US political, intelligence and media establishments committed to openly pursuing the truth.** Let us hope the trail has not gone cold because we cannot expect Beijing to co-operate. Most likely China knows the origins of the virus; hence its ludicrous distracting claims that Covid-19 might have been imported with frozen food from North America. The two plausible scenarios put forward to explain the Wuhan virus so far involve “zoonotic spillover” (transfer from animals) or an accidental release from a laboratory. This city of more than 10 million people hosts the Wuhan Institute of Virology, which is a leading Chinese microbiology facility and a global leader in coronavirus research. **If Chinese authorities or organisations, such as the WIV, had any conclusive evidence that the virus had come from bats or pangolin in a wet market we would have seen it by now. Their failure to trace the origin, speaks volumes.** Considerable evidence has been in the public arena for at least a year pointing to the laboratory leak scenario. It was a matter of public record that the closest known virus to Covid-19 was taken to the Wuhan institute after it was ...

You know that right wing conspiracy theory that the China virus came from a lab in China?
Lightman comments on May 28, 2021:
# Eight reasons I think Covid escaped from the lab Peter Jennings May 28, 2021 US President Joe Biden’s statement two days ago on the investigation into the origins of Covid-19 shows the US intelligence community is making progress towards uncovering whether the virus was released because of a laboratory accident or from human contact with an infected animal. Biden tells us his intelligence agencies agree these are the two likely scenarios, with one agency leaning towards the lab accident, two towards the pangolin-bites-man theory, while the others “do not believe there is sufficient information to assess one to be more likely than the other”. It’s no small thing to get all 18 US intelligence agencies agreeing that the laboratory accident scenario was a likely cause of the pandemic. The agencies clearly have made progress since their first statement, Intelligence Community Statement on Origins of Covid-19, released in April last year, which found the virus “was not man-made or genetically modified”. They could do no more than promise to “rigorously examine emerging information” about the origins of Covid-19. Biden has given his intelligence system 90 days to “bring us closer to a definitive conclusion”. I’ll speculate here that the administration thinks a conclusion can be made. Why set up the intelligence agencies to fail? The President also said the further inquiry would include asking “specific questions for China”. It is astonishing that it has taken 15 months before a US administration decided to put Beijing on the spot with some direct questions. In effect, Xi Jinping is on 90 days’ notice for his regime to put aside the bluster and make its own case about the two likely scenarios. I’m with the courageous US intelligence agency that is leaning towards the laboratory accident scenario. Here are my reasons for this view. First, we know China has long had an interest in developing biological and chemical weapons. The US State Department made that assessment public years ago. Second, we know Chinese military personnel and scientists have written studies on how to fight wars with biological agents. The Australian’s Sharri Markson has reported extensively on this. It’s true there is a huge volume of Chinese military writing that does not necessarily represent Chinese Communist Party policy, but it’s significant that specialists inside Chinese military science are writing on this subject. Third, we know the Wuhan Institute of Virology is designed to be a secure bio-research facility and before 2019 was working on coronaviruses, including on so-called gain-of-function research on how to make viruses more virulent. The much-discredited Joint World Health Organisation-China Study into ...

I'll have to get a transcript of what she actually said because I found myself wondering why they were calling her anti-semitic when all she did was compare one form of forced identification with another... did she mention mask wearing, did she mention genocide? here is what she wrote... > Vaccinated employees get a vaccination logo just like the Nazi’s forced Jewish people to wear a gold star. > Vaccine passports & mask mandates create discrimination against unvaxxed people who trust their immune systems to a virus that is 99% survivable. Personally I stay away from such comparisons.

# Costly hazards on the road to electric vehicle take-up Judith Sloan May 25, 2021 Readers will be pleased to know independent member for Warringah Zali Steggall has been able to trade in her gas-guzzling SUV for a hybrid vehicle as parliament returns this week. Evidently, rigid parliamentary rules didn’t allow her to go the whole hog and get an electric vehicle at this stage. But she’s not giving up, joining forces with fellow House of Representatives members Helen Haines and Rebekha Sharkie to promote EVs, including taxpayers paying for charging stations in the private and public car parks of Parliament House. Presumably, EV owners won’t be expected to pay for the substantial electricity used to charge batteries. **According to some dubious survey, we are all dying to buy EVs, although the actual figures tell a different story. The percentage of new car sales that are EVs is well under 1 per cent and among those new 7000 EV sales last year a reasonable proportion were not paid for by the user of the car.** **It pays to be well-off or have someone else pay if you are considering the purchase of an EV. That Steggall and her girl pals thought it worthwhile hosting a demonstration of the Mercedes EQC, a fully electric car, at Parliament House tells us a lot. This car retails for about $160,000. If Tesla is your preferred EV, you are looking at $67,000 plus on-road costs for the base model and $190,000 for the schmick Model S, plus on-road costs. It’s tempting to order two.** One of the problems of having an EV is that if you want to charge it at home it’s preferable to have three-phase power. But, in any street, only a few houses can have three-phase power lest the grid becomes unstable. What has occurred in parts of the US, particularly in California, is that houses with three-phase power are attracting a price premium relative to nearby houses. Relying on charging stations has its downside, including the possibility of a long wait to get access, in addition to charging time. In any case, many houses don’t have garages and people also live in high-rise dwellings where garages haven’t been configured to allow EVs to be charged up. If universal EV uptake is the aim, we are not starting from a good place. Lately the EV lobbying industry has been going into overdrive, seeking to secure taxpayer subsidies to kickstart demand for these vehicles. One lobbyist has taken to calling EVs emissions-free vehicles even though their manufacture, particularly of their batteries, is associated with higher emissions than standard internal combustion engine vehicles. Indeed, on one estimate, the emissions associated with an EV with a large battery (and therefore greater range) are 40 per cent of the total emissions of an ...

No, Harry, it’s what you spout that is bonkers Chris Kenny 1:00AM May 22, 2021 125 Comments Prince Harry might soon rival the great philosophers of our time. He would be too modest, of course, to make that claim for himself, and he is unlikely to pen and publish a lengthy treatise to guide our thinking. But it is his example that provides the lessons and delivers the cut-through insight. The commoner-by-choice, formerly-known-as-royal, might not even be aware of how he helps we commoners-by-birth to reassess the meaning of our existence. “I’ve got so much I want to say about the First Amendment as I sort of understand it,” Harry said in yet another media appearance last week, in which he complained about media attention, and showcased his ignorance at the same time. “But it is bonkers.” Sure is, Harry, who gives us a millennial twist on that famous maxim attributed to Voltaire. In this case, we would need to say: “I know you do not even comprehend what it is that you are trying to say, but I defend to the death your right to try.” Perhaps the last accidental philosopher to deliver such a powerfully inadvertent life lesson was that underrated Antipodean genius Strop — surf lifesaver and sidekick to the eponymous star in The Paul Hogan show. In one illuminating skit, Strop was recovering after confronting some mortal danger, the specific threat escapes me now, but upon survival he was visibly relieved. “My whole life passed before my eyes,” said Strop, before pausing contemplatively and adding: “God, it was boring.” Ever since, I have endeavoured not to waste a moment. Carpe diem — thanks Strop. Likewise, in more recent times, Harry’s antics have helped me, at a much later stage in my life, come to grips with what passes for political or moral posturing from the millennial masses that so dominates our public debate. Harry and Meghan’s great lesson to us all is that we should ignore it all; none of it means diddly squat. After all, if you can confront media intrusion by baring your soul and detailing your most intimate family traumas in a multimillion-dollar exclusive television interview, then no paradox is off limits and none of your causes can be taken seriously. Hypocrisy matters; like living a life of inherited privilege and then claiming victimhood, campaigning to reduce carbon footprints while taking holidays in private jets, escaping the insularity of the monarchy to find refuge in the bubble of Hollywood, or lecturing the world about sharing wealth, while living from the proceeds of empire. Let us not be too hard on Harry. He served his country, in uniform, and he lost his mum in a tragedy he and many others still try to blame on the shallow media she courted. But his public ...
