Hanno comments on Feb 6, 2021:
The average IQ is not terribly important. It is the actual number of people with IQ’s above 120 that matters. That is why the IQ of India is relatively low (although I have my reservations about that number), however due to its large population and high IQ variation it is a world power. China in the other with its high average IQ and population, due to its narrow IQ variation, actually have similar number of >120 IQ individuals as India and much lower than the US.

PJMedia: VDH: Are Universities Doomed? [pjmedia.com]
Hanno comments on Dec 23, 2022:
The solution is already applied elsewhere in the world. Some European countries have “Technical” universities that only have natural and applied science, engineering and architecture departments. They are independent from other universities with social, history and language departments. In these countries (for example Finland) the “technical” universities are the most desired to get into and produce very good graduates.
Be careful what you wish for, kid!

Haha! That is not a university. That is the Union Buildings in South Africa. Designed by Gerhard Moerdyk, they are the seat of the South African government’s parliament in Pretoria. They are among the most impressive and beautiful buildings in Africa. The local university in Pretoria have similar beautiful buildings designed by Moerdyk… just smaller in scale. The second is a Sotho (northern black tribe) traditional hut. Thanks for bringing back fond memories.

I can accept stupidity... I know many people whose intelligence significantly exceeds mine. So I should be patient with the less gifted as those who are brighter than me have been patient with me. I can accept incompetence to some extent. I am a very poor piano player, although I don’t sell myself as one and don’t force people to listen to me playing. But I can understand we cannot all be masters in everything and sometimes we have to do things we really are not suited for. I can also accept ignorance. We all don’t have time to do in-depth research, however then, shut up when you don’t know what you are talking about... I know I know, we all love to have opinions. What I cannot accept is wilful ignorance. When facts are presented to you, however your bias is so severe that you can only see one side irrespective how well the other side is explained to you. You don’t have to agree to the other side, however you need to agree that the other side exist and on some level it has merit. The level of wilful ignorance is as high as it ever was. The accessibility of information had no effect. People wilfully and knowingly are ignorant.

Hanno comments on Jul 12, 2020:
A friend once explained to more eloquently... however I will try to repeat. Rights (freedoms) are like a bag of marbles with only so many in there. Once you have handed them out, you need to take some back to give more to someone else. My right to be gay or abort my baby, removes your right to live in a Christian society ruled by Christian values. Giving woman the right vote, halved my rights as a male voter. Allowing immigrants to move freely removes residents right to associate with whom they want. To protect the rights of everyone we need to remove the rights of criminals. Giving criminals more rights reduces the rights of their victims. Giving someone rights necessarily implies having to take it from someone else.

Did the people who commented below even read the 1945 article? The second half sets two very clear goals and they are imperative for both the US and all other countries. Whatever Russia gain in this war must come at the highest expense possible without any escalation that may lead to nuclear war. This means no actual foreign boots In Ukraine and not encouraging Ukraine to enter Russia soil with western weapons. The people of Ukraine, as a sovereign country may defend their country as long as they wish and it is for them to decide the cost benefit analyses of having their country destroyed however keep most of it and live as a free people vs surrendering and living under Russia again. Finland made that decision to their great benefit. If this is not done, nothing will stop Putin and Xi to rinse and repeat the process every 5 years and add one more country to their respective empires over the next 40 years until the old empires are restored. This is very bad for the US and the rest of the world.

You are grouping a very large group of people into one group. What about mental disability... or the disability to be born to abusive parents? Or the disability to have the wrong skin colour or sexual preference? Or to be born in the wrong country or religion? There are many disabilities other than the obvious physical ones. It becomes very complex and there are no simple solutions. The issue how you play off different disabilities and rewarding merit. If you stop rewarding actual merit you very quickly fall into mediocrity leading to failure of the whole system. You need to distinguish between equality of opportunity and equality of outcome goals you are setting. We are not all equal. However we all need a fair go at life. Now any additional support you give to disabled people necessarily discriminates against able people... whatever your definition of disabled/able is. It becomes a question of equality of opportunity and what you need to do to ensure we all have a fair go at being successful. That necessarily require you to discriminate against the able. Is being black a disability? Today is seen as such by many. Should governments reward companies for hiring disabled people? Should government give preference to disabled hires for its own staff. Or make legislation that allow disabled to compete more fairly? And who is to pay for all that... because it does come at a cost. If it was cheaper to hire disabled people we all would do it. Providing disability access cost money and has to be enforced by legislation, else no one would do it. Sad but true. What we can look forward is that technology is reducing the need to discriminate against able people all the time and hopefully this will become easier and easier to solve in the years to come.

If memory serves me right in 1998, in the South African National Arts festival and awards, almost all the awards went to black artists, for the first time in the 40 odd year run of the event. The next year a number of non-black artists entered half their work under their own names and half under aliases, specifically black names. White artists won in 1999 all the major awards, but only under their aliases. They won nothing under their own names. In 2000 entering under an alias were banned... however by now the awards lost all their prestige. Their has since been large arguments about whites claiming black ancestry... myself having my great-great-great-great- grandfather taking a Khoi wife alongside his German wife... and 12 children with no record of who the mother was. My family is dark for Europeans and I always thought it was some Khoi blood in my ancestry. However, no chance of me claiming that.

Russians kill 200 top NATO & Ukrainian military personnel?
Hanno comments on Apr 26, 2023:
The problem with the NATO personnel is that they have families who live in countries that have access to internet and uncontrolled media. So it is possible and likely to suppress the deaths of Ukrainian personnel under a war government, it is very difficult to do that with deaths of staff from other countries. People not under military control won’t just shut up if their husbands or sons just disappear. Someone somewhere will speak out: “Hey, what happened to my husband”?
You know that my problem is with all the 'anti-trans/pro?
Hanno comments on Apr 10, 2022:
50% of all married woman murdered - the husband did it. Police statistics in both South Africa and New Zealand. Likely true everywhere That does not mean husbands are murderers. Only a very tiny fraction are. I don’t know the % of child abuse but I would wager more than 80% of the cases it is the parent. That does not mean parents are child abusers, only a small fraction are. So yes, parents does not know what is best for their own kids, however the government does not know either. However, the government does not love children as parents do (most parents anyway). So for the vast majority of children, parental care and with that parental decisions are the best. So only in the provable and clear cases of child abuse should the government interfere with parents. I don’t think may will disagree with me on all above. The question then is when is it a clear and provable case? When should a parent have the right to say no to a child’s medical treatment and procedures? Cases of Johava Witnesses not allowing life saving blood transfusions etc abound yet it is still practiced everywhere.

I disagree that there is a selfless concern or act. Every act we do is is for our own interest. When I do good, not even just for other people, but even nature or anything else, I feel good about myself, or at least better. The Dalai Lama himself confess that it is to find peace of mind... and he needs to do this for his own peace of mind, to validate his own existence. We do good things ultimately because it makes us feel good, the more “selfless” the act, the more serotonin and dopamine’s are released in our brains. I am not arguing against doing good, however we need to be honest that we are doing it for our own benefit and the actual “good deed” is just a bonus. That is why you see so many people “doing good” while actually doing the opposite... like brainwashing children into a faith or political view... they think they are doing good, and the reward is all in their own brains.

Rand Paul and other republicans are saying that the impeachment trial is an affront to unity, that ...
Hanno comments on Jan 27, 2021:
I may be wrong as well... but here goes in my opinion: It was clear post 2016 election that democrats had no desire for unity and immediately started to look for reasons to impeach... and eventually made up the Russian collusion story. I think calling for unity anytime by republicans would have been futile. Now, after all the claims of election irregularities, I think calls for unity by Biden is futile as well. Until you resolve the issues raised and stop prosecuting people who supported Trump, there cannot be any unity. The point Paul Rand is trying to make is that against all hope, Biden did call for unity. However, the actions of persecuting Trump and his supporters contradict that call completely. So he is trying to say, if you call and want unity, the fist step is stop persecuting Trump et al. So this is not so much Republicans suddenly wanting unity to stop the prosecution of Trump, but more if you want unity, stop doing things that will achieve the opposite.

Hanno comments on Dec 5, 2019:
I still remembered as a kid how the old SAL was the safest airline in the world. It used to only hire ex-airforce pilots and ex-airforce mechanics... the very best training that could be done at the time. To work for SAL was an honor, a prestige. And now?

Jikes!!!
Maybe we should focus on what both democrats and republicans can agree on, like how hot I am.
Hanno comments on Nov 4, 2020:
That is about it I am afraid. Lol!
This point seems lost on about half the country.

Feelings ALWAYS trump Facts! Oprah started this a decade ago in preparation... your truth is all that matters... even if it flies in the face of the real world.
Singapore Wins Praise For Its COVID-19 Strategy. The U.S. Does Not
Hanno comments on Mar 13, 2020:
Hehe... USA has 70 times Singapore population. USA has 100s of international airports, Singapore a handful. USA is a massive country, Singapore a tiny island. Plot Singapore next to New Zealand... and Singapore looks bad! New Zealand only has 7 cases after many days. Does this mean NZ has a better response than Singapore? Of course not! Many factors play a role here.
Is it weird that Trump hired Jeffrey Epstein's lawyers?
Hanno comments on Jan 17, 2020:
In South Africa, the black government only hires white lawyers to present them in court. No, they are not racist, it is just that until now the best and most experienced lawyers in the South Africa are still all white... maybe the same reason Trump hired the same lawyers as Epstein. Being very rich, they both hired the best lawyers money can buy?

Regarding nuclear power. The “nuclear renaissance” was in full swing until Fukushima. It took 25 years to get over Chernobyl. It was thought it would take 25 years again. And hence I retired from nuclear research and only occasionally consult. However: The whole energy crisis in Europe… all due to Germany going “green” and abandoning nuclear energy. The only way out of the oil and gas dependence is nuclear. However; That means that every country in the world can become energy independent and you could actually conceive an electric car future. So, the very powerful cannot have that, so the impossible dream of “renewables” are pushed to stop the actual saviour, nuclear to stop the oil and gas dependence. So, I am sitting back and watch with interest if Germany will finally concede its huge error and restart nuclear… and thereby regain its energy independence. If Germany never abandoned nuclear… Russia would not have been able to invade Ukraine.

Hanno comments on Jan 11, 2020:
Remember, being fat is genetic, nothing you can do about it and certainly not something you can affect for example by eating less...unlike gender which has nothing to do with your DNA... that of course is every babies choice to make just before they are born or to change as you see fit later.
I did not know that.
Hanno comments on Dec 16, 2022:
I am not so sure about that. We were taught to say “species of fish”, Or something like that. Fishes was not a word in my time? Then again, all languages are made up and the rules changes continuously.
Anyone been to a Biden rally?

Funny, even though it is clearly photoshopped... Must say, I just love touching my wife in public... not THAT inappropriately... but still... after all these years still nice to touch her bottom.

So they basically concede that the vaccine is useless?
I Don’t Have Any Of Those…
Hanno comments on Aug 22, 2022:
Of course they do. people got all those disease BEFORE the vaccines came along, and they will keep on getting those diseases years from now irrespective of they we vaccinated or not. Sorry, the poster is not just ignorant but stupid. The question is if there is a statistical significant increase : decrease in any diseases between vaccinated and unvaccinated.
