How many lives will be lost in a post lockdown depression? Interesting question; the UK has had austerity measures in place since 2012 due to the aftermath of the 2008 recession, which may well turn out to be a minor event compared to an actual financial depression. The Wikipedia page for the UK National Health Service cites an estimate of 130,000 deaths due to the contraction of the economy due to recession and austerity. Will 130,000 people die of Coronavirus?

Yes, that's true, but the point I'm making is that we have a realistic estimate of how many lives austerity has cost in the UK (130,000 over 8 years of recession). The economic downturn caused by this shutting down of the Western economy is more likely to be worse, so we have a figure of hundreds of thousands of deaths, weighed against an intangible figure which is looking increasingly likely to be in the hundreds or thousands.What's the rational course of action?
