While politics interests me less than religion, I think some understanding of the current political situation is needed. Those blaming the elites are missing the point. America's founding fathers understood from history that democracy inevitably leads to tyranny. This is why America had representative government and, even more importantly, limited suffrage. The vote was limited to men with property and without debt, in other words to responsible men. If this was still the electorate today then we wouldn't have our current problems.
Universal suffrage inevitably leads to government by corrupt elite supported by the moronic masses. This is what America has today. Calling the Right "populist" is wrong. The Right is composed of a sane minority, the same kind of minority that supported the American Revolution. Such a minority has no more power to defend itself under universal suffrage than it did under monarchy. Universal suffrage should be overthrown for the same reason that monarchy was overthrown, and a form of limited suffrage like that of early America should be reinstated.

The American system, while far from perfect, worked reasonably well, it functioned even through the Great Depression until the 60s. Until then America was a union of citizens. During the 60s people began thinking they themselves knew better than anyone else. We forgot that we are a part of a union and others needed to be considered, not just ourselves. We have become a cacophony of selfish children insisting that we each get our own way.
