Just reflecting on how lazy people have become. I work in the circulation department of a local newspaper--yes they still exist : )

Most of our residential routes nowadays are done by mail. We can't get anyone to fill them. And they are a pretty good bang for the buck. Once you really learn a residential route, you can do it very fast, so hourly, it's a lot of cash for very little time. But people always quit after the first day. We would love to fill all our routes, but no one is willing to spend four or five days learning them. They can take 10 hours on your fist go, but will only take 2 hours once you learn them.

We have three intrepid route drivers still working. We can't get any more.

We had 2 commercial route drivers also, but recently lost one. I'm not sure we will ever replace him. Right now I'm stuck doing his route along with all my other duties in the office. It's grueling.

Please God just find me one normal hard-working person!!!!

That would be a job I wouldn't mind doing if I didn't have to use my own car.

Curious what a few hours on a route earns...

The commercial one I'm doing right now is hourly $12 per hour, uses a company van, and takes me around 8 hours as of the last go. The guy who left did it in about 5 hours.

The residential routes pay by how many papers are in them, once you learn it, it's around $25/hour, give or take. I used to do one when I was much younger in another town, and my route took me an hour to do except on sundays, when it took me a couple of hours. That was back in the 1990s. I got about $150 a week.
