Enjoyed this article. As a conservative who has recently embraced the productive nature of the necessity of left and right influences for a productive society, (thanks Jordan Peterson), I appreciate the sane reasoning expressed here. When Dems return to reasonable dialog, their influence as a conscience to the nation will be constructive and not destructive.

Liberals are no longer. They are the left, they are the socialist commies. Whatever is left of the liberals is meaningless, they should join the centre right.

I would really enjoy seeing some liberals like James engage with the actual "right." There are flaws in liberalism, all the way down. There is no "arc of History" bending toward justice. There is no blank slate. There IS a common humanity, but the things we have in common are our universally "missing something," and our otherwise complete lack of universals. The Enlightenment is failed.

How has the Enlightenment failed??? Our modern secular and prosperous life is due to the Enlightenment.

@shj648

I haven't figured it out yet, but everywhere I probe into current reality I find roots in the enlightenment. That much is true. Still, everywhere I dig into current dysphoria within culture, society, humanity at large and communities and individuals writ small, I find roots in exactly the same ideas and institutions that followed seemingly inevitably from the enlightenment. It's like it kicked off changes that began almost linear and in the late 20th century went exponential...to a point that the pace of social "progress" exceeds the rate of human and our institutional assimilation. Material progress is doing pretty well, but social capital seems almost consumed, or at least poorly distributed.

@govols How? We have less wars than ever before, we are more open and tolerant. We also know more about other countries. If you pay attention carefully you will see that our social capital is going way up.

@shj648

You and I are a different "we," maybe. The US has been at war its entire existence. Many in the (western, at least) world are precisely not open, but instead consume the world almost exclusively from within small ideological bubbles, and tolerance is something a body builds against poison. Social capital is felt in pat through how many people you can call on to babysit or help you move, and in part by how at home you feel in the most diverse, deviant, or atypical subculture within your overall culture.

Hello govols. Have you lived outside the West? You live in America, yet your ability to look at America as if you were observing from the outside is fascinating.

@Naomi, I'm a child of the American South and have never made a home outside Her. I've lived in three US Census defined metropolitan statistical regions: rural to Atlanta as a small child, the suburbs of a small Appalachian city as a youth through teen, and in the Tennessee Valley since the last bit of high school. I'm far less an American than I am a Southerner in general, and a lowland Appalachian more specifically. I exist under the jurisdiction of the US Empire, but hardly a "Citizen" of influence within it. Yes, I'm natural born and a voter, but the ruling dynamic is so far away from my personal being that I actually DO generally see what the world knows as "America" from an outside perspective.

@govols I think that's a good attitude to have.

@Naomi

It keeps me functional.

@govols You should travel abroad so that you can cross-reference your knowledge with facts.

@Naomi

I would love to travel abroad, but the Empire's airport security and my own modest financial circumstance have conspired to make it unlikely.

If it were possible I would do Egypt, Persia, Greece and Ionia (indeed, bits of the whole eastern Mediterranean/western Asia), through eastern Europe, around the Baltic and North Seas, to the English Isles.

In a screwed up way, I do and don't aspire to Central and Eastern Asia, for while I know a bit about how the eastern steppe folk made me who I am, the East confounds me, and I'm over fifty.

Still, I had a TSA (transportation and security admin) employee ask me to turn down my waste band without raising an untucked T-shirt above the very waste band they were asking me to turn down. That sort of shit is insufferable.

All of that aside, what's your idea of the difference between knowledge and facts?

@govols "What's your idea of the difference between knowledge and facts?"
Nothing profound, really. I have a funny habit of not settling with general perceptions of things. When you are in a foreign country, people often tell you about their country and society differently from what outsiders think. I'm not planning to go to Iran any time soon but a coupe of friends went there recently, and they loved Iranian culture - food, art, music, architecture, etc. Yes, I'm interested in different cultures.

TL..DR all. Got too all-encompassing of political spectrum analysis for an article.

I'm a classic liberal (of the Founding Fathers type) but definitely not hard right. I want social safety nets to be funded before Corporate welfare or government spending (shitbag Pelosi type.) ā–

I want a strong as fuck military without ever needing to use it. I want what consenting people do in their private life to not be judged by government, but I also don't want to have their lifestyles thrown in my face. Be a faggot. Just don't faggot around in front of me. ā–

I want all races treated fairly, although I do know for a fact that black Americans act out with more passion towards all things that trigger them. This, I believe, is the reason for law enforcement disproportionately responding to blacks. Both groups are culpable. I'm no fan of law enforcement. They are criminals also. ā–

I want taxes spent on constantly updating infrastructure, besides the necessaries including the social programs I mentioned previously. I hate the Federal Reserve and the licentious way it handles our money supply. I want clean water and air, but I want every damn thing the earth has to be mined or harvested for human consumption. I don't give a fuck about people too dumb to understand true science. I'm done trying to argue with them. I prefer violent revolt over in defense of fair and equitable usage of resources over regulations designed to make mankind hear that it's an invader of earth. We own our slice of this fucking planet. ā–

Lastly, I know men are more virtuous and ntelligent, and capable of governing than women are. Some women are capable but not most of them by any means. I really don't care if it is unequal in practice. Men are just better. Women are subservient to the wisdom of men, on the whole. ā–

Hard not to completely agree with you.
On your last paragraph the use of the word ā€œsomeā€ is very important. Although I would only want to add that ā€œsomeā€ me are also completely incompetent.
The fraction of competent men in the world is low... and it ainā€™t any better with woman.

I get what this is saying, but no. The left donā€™t get there just deserts in this essay because itā€™s biased and the tone is leftist. Where is the ā€œcolourfulā€ use of rhetoric to describe the lunatic far-left?
I saw reference to the word bigly, why?
Sanders is running to get elected, is there anything further from the centre? How about the word commie to offset bigly?
As long as the left has a Sanders, itā€™ll be an unmitigated disaster and Liberalism will just be a new word for socialism.
I understand this essay, but yes he is a liberal and that means UN oversight, borderless chaos, and an underlying ideology that questions sovereignty. Thatā€™s a big No from me and it confirms heā€™s just a Liberal.

It would be helpful and very enlightening for anyone who has not done so to do a little reading on "The Sokol Hoax".
Pretty much tells all you need to know about the intellectual and philosophical corruption of academia and the greater institutions of "higher learning".
Here is a little blurb from the Wiki article on "The Grievance Studies Affair" -

Boghossian, Lindsay, and Pluckrose wrote twenty articles that promoted deliberately absurd ideas or morally questionable acts and submitted them to various peer-reviewed journals. Although they had planned for the project to run until January 2019, the trio admitted the hoax in October 2018 after journalists from The Wall Street Journal revealed that Helen Wilson, the purported author of their published article in Gender, Place & Culture, did not exist. The hoax was then brought to wider attention by media outlets and their documentary of the project, which was uploaded to YouTube. By the time of the reveal, four of their 20 papers had been published, three had been accepted but not yet published, six had been rejected, and seven were still under review. One of the published papers had won special recognition.[4] These published articles included arguments that dogs engage in rape culture and that men could reduce their transphobia by anally penetrating themselves with sex toys, and a rewrite of Adolf Hitler's Mein Kampf in feminist language.
