When I came up in school, particularly junior high, and high school, I had teachers that were teaching long before the feds created the department of education, and before that entity had the total control it now has over the indoctrination centers they are now. Growing up in Texas I had teachers that veered off the standard propaganda that was taught about Lincoln's War of Aggression. They gave us kids some truth about that war such as secession was not about keeping slaves, and Lincoln did not free anyone with the Proclamation of Emancipation, most importantly all the slaves owned by citizens of the Union states, of which there were many.

Secession was not an act of treason. This fit like a glove with the idealism of the American Revolution, and the Constitution of the United States. THere was a reason no Confederate leader was tried for treason in the aftermath of the war though many yankees not only wanted to see it happen, but demanded it. Steps were taken in that direction, but instead men like General Lee, and President Davis were released from prison without any charges being brought against them because Lincoln was informed that to bring them to trial would prove that states did indeed have the right to seceded if they felt it in the best interst of their citizens.

The victory of the Union was the end of the most unique feature of the Untied States, the idea that people have the right to self determination. It was the beginning of the bloated federal government that finds ever increasing new ways to destroy our freedom, and liberty.

The 14th amendment removed the citizenship of the individual from the state and gave it to the federal government. (section 1) It also transfered the debt of the federal government to the peoples of the states. (section 4)

In Ken Burns’ documentary series on the civil war, Shelby Foote made the point thusly: before the war, when one spoke of the countr, the phrase, “These United States are...” after, correct usage has been, “The United States is...”
