What are the basis of my thinking?
Jordan Peterson describes this very well:
Critical thought is having two opposing ideas in your head at the same time while fully understanding that both ideas could be wrong.
The first time I did that when I was 19 and then again when I was 32. The second time I solved the problem. It took me three years and was very painful, however changed my life.
Now I try to practice it whenever I can. It is still painful sometimes as the internal conflict and created dissonance is tough to deal with. However without it you cannot get an understanding of the problem and never grow.

I was taught to question everything I read or was taught in school, this has saved me from having to relearn things that I was taught that were in error. Most people who taught me things that were in error did not do so purposely, they had only not questioned what they had learned. This has changed in the past few years though in that I find people that are willing to purposely teach that which is in error. I am always interested in finding new things to learn and comparing it to what I have already learned because with each thing I learn it reveals more that I don't know.

I was thought this in third year university. We did many exercises to show us how our conventional thinking and understanding was wrong about simple things and how flawed and biased all observations are.
That was decades ago and none of my younger engineers and scientists I talked to do this training anymore. It is definitely missing in NZ and most of Europe.
You see it in the way the younger generations think.
Very worrying.
@Hanno I started school in 1962, moved around alot so I was in 8 different schools before I graduated 12th grade. The best thing that helped me was having a grandmother that was a reference librarian who taught me to read before I was school age. She also taught me how to find information to answer my endless questions. This sometimes caused problems with teachers that did not like to have what they were teaching questioned. Me and my wife home schooled our kids, that have since gone on to college one of the main things we taught our kids was critical thinking.
