A little truth. It is funny how folks try passing off this fairy tale that indians did not war, and fight over territory just like people over the rest of the world. So many myths have arisen since the 60s about how wonderful and nice indians were, and how horrible white people were. There was bad on all sides, and there was also good.

The exact same is happening here in NZ.

There is a very large and interesting read "Little Bighorn Appendices".. Writings from the time, from both sides.. Extremely well written, and historically correct.. And from my perspective, I always liked Dusters.

Without Christianity recieved by the Indians any treaties were likely broke by U.S. government because indians first broke their obligations. But a lack of ability to read and write by most indians made them susceptible to breaking bargains and not knowing the consequences. Our government simply applied the "Indian Standard" to their own dealing with Indians. That standard would be, he who is more savage and able to assert his will has earned his rights. I'm sure in 1492 back on the European continent and Eurasia there were plenty of savage wars and conflicts taking place that redrew borders.

I just never understood why we so romanticized a polylithic and culturally diverse and divided people to the point that we become masochistic about it. Get over it. They lost. We won.

Welcome back now to 2019.

The fact is that the US broke pretty much every treaty it made and then carried out a campaign of ethnic cleansing so successful that it will likely never be held accountable. I've learned a lot from genealogy, following my ancestors west as they moved into areas newly open to settlement time and time again. And sometimes they moved or waged war before areas were open!

Point being indians did plenty of warring against each other before Europeans ever came across. It's not like things were all rainbows and sunshine between the various tribes. Some tribes got wiped out, or folded into conquering tribes, while others were the victors. I did a great deal of reading about the Apache through the years. They were almost wiped off the face of the Earth by hostile tribes when their numbers got cut down for reasons unknown. That's why, once they had found a place to settle and rebuild they became such a vicious bunch. They adopted a never again policy and wanted to be the baddest tribe on the block.

The only reason the indians got the short end of the stick was because they were so primitive. If they had the advantage of better weapons and numbers I doubt they would have offered treaties to be broken later, they would have gone straight for the ethnic cleansing.

Not that successful..

So what. Welcome to 16th-19th century human nature and foreign affairs. The Settlers won. The indians should have united themselves against the settlers and had developed technology to have beaten them.

Nostalgia for guilt is so nihilistic and boring to have to hear about.

@DanielEvans THANK YOU! I was gonna write the same thing... then I saw your post.

I try to be realistic, focusing on how I see people treated today. A lot of the time these arguments arise just so we can avoid thinking about the problems right in front of us. Why argue about the past? Why not teach things as they where instead of sugar coating it? Show the good and bad on both sides and maybe we can stop arguing about whether natives deserve clean drinking water or not (an issue I know to be a fact, where I live at least).

I know as a species we have a lot to answer for, instead of fighting for lost generations I wish we would fight harder for the people suffering in front of us. Nobody is above our past.. arguing about who was right or wrong is likely to lead us down the same path again.

Quibbling over long dead issues is a silly and petulant waste of time.
Native Americans, like all indigenous peoples, were displaced by people with more developed technology.
Like the Aztecs, most of them were wiped out by European diseases for which they had no immunity.

I like it!
