So 4chan (evidently the MSM’s go-to source for such matters) falsely reported the gesture 
supports the alt-right so that the media would over-react. And now, the ADL has done just that. As a result, anyone who makes this common gesture is now associated with skinheads and hatred. Cause, y’know, ADL sez so. Swell.

I'm sure it's just a natural hand movement or a troll when these folks pose for the camera with it.
It's like most of the trolls those people on 4chan do that ultimately catch on with the right. Forgive my skepticism when someone like Andrew Auernheimer says his use of the n-word and sending white supremacist flyers to network-connected printers at universities is a troll, but then he goes on to work for the Daily Stormer and owns up to being a Nazi. It's not ironic when it symbolizes your actual beliefs. Moreover, it really doesn't matter how it started--words and symbols can change meaning as more people use them.
@WilyRickWiles succeeding commonly used gestures and phrases to identarian extremist viewpoints doesn't seem to be a useful way to combat any series of ideology.
It only works to identify those you can actively treat as less than human.
The wholesale dehumanizing of opposing ideas by linking to extremist viewpoints will result in violence. Although that is likely the point for both sides.
You don't get a Bleeding Kansas incident while viewing your neighbors as reasonable people.

@Naomi I mean that was part of the inspiration for it. I'll give Trump the benefit of the doubt and say that he's not intentionally signalling anything. The alt right media figures who he lets into press conferences, on the other hand, are another story.
