If the value of an artist's work is based upon what buyers are willing to pay for it, why is the value of other labor not determined by fair market value, supply and demand? I see the same people who demand a $15 minimum wage for jobs with a labor glut happy to pit American artists and artisans against developing world factory workers when buying comparable art and craft items for their home decor or wardrobe.

I’m not clear on your point. The value of labour is indeed determined by fair market value and supply/demand, isn’t it?
How are artists pitted against foreign factory workers?

You're right. Artists are thrilled to work for a nickle an hour. It fuels their passion.

Sorry DM, what exactly are you saying? What artist is working for a nickel an hour? I didn’t say that. Plenty of artists make a good living. What’s it got to do with foreign factory workers?

Comparing art to labor is a bit absurd in my opinion. Art is a labor of passion. Good art is created out of need of expression. Meaning it must be created, not for profit, but because it simply must be expressed. If art is competing with factory workers and wal-mart, then I'd argue that's it's not real art at all.

As for minimum wage, it's a scam. The real issue is the value of a dollar, not how many dollars you make an hour. In other words, cost of living. Raising the minimum wage does not decrease the cost of living. In fact, it increases it, as it makes many things more expensive. If politicians really cared about the people, they would find ways to lower cost of living instead of increasing minimum wage.

Ever heard of something called the "Federal endowment for the Arts" ?

sort of a minimum wage system implemented by FDR I believe...I must say - or admit there are some Gov't subsidies for which I am grateful as a lover of the Arts and a lover of food.

Before I smear the room with all kinds of judgments about money /mechanization /extrensic reward /consumerism /social value determined by greed, how do you think money influences art? What are the long-term influences? And, what impact does made-in-china-art/craft have on the intrinsic value of art in our society? Does cheap crap lower the contribution of art to experience? Just curious where you're coming from.

Cultural death by the sword of reduced expectations of originality and quality comes to mind, followed closely by discouragement of artists and craftsmen who can't obtain supplies for the cost of finished imported goods. I'm not speaking only of painters, sculptors, musicians, etc., but of small designers and creators of fine furniture, handmade rugs, unique clothing, milliners, jewelers, glass blowers, metal workers, and the like-- fine craftsmen of one-of-a-kind pieces competing against polished factory knockoffs reproduced by near slaves. As art goes, so goes civilization.

@DMcCreery1956, that's about where I imagined you being. I have no special knowledge of art, but I see its value intrinsically. Monetizing art can be a problem, but certainly bastardizing art in mass production--I don't see how we could keep it from reducing contribution, and then what a dark place the world is. I hate the idea that we'd live in a world where cheap knockoffs replace craftsmanship. BUT, somebody alluded to Maslow's hierarchy of needs, and I think that's a thing. That places class constraints around some artists and some art--inaccessibility. It's a problem. Do you have any ideas how to balance or rebalance the scale?
