“Silver….or lead?”
Pablo Escobar

Cooperation or capitulation seems a fairly reasonable approach when dealing with conflicting interest. Especially if you happen to be the one holding the gun. A mentor once told me to be sure I had” a stack of gold and a gun stashed away” because” what you can’t get with one you can take with the other”.
Force has always been an asset. It continues to be so. With a yearly expenditure of $600+ billion dollars there is no greater force on the planet than the US military. It’s not even close. Barring the use of nuclear weapons there isn’t a country on the globe capable of withstanding the combined forces of the United States.
To what ends do we make such a massive investment? Our nation freedom? To be sure, but if we cut that 20% would the red Chinese come storming in to enslave us? I think not. If we cut that number by 10% would the Russians catch up to our overwhelming advantage? Perhaps but it’d likely take them 5-10 years to do so.
Would it put our young men and women currently serving in greater danger? Maybe. But might we mitigate that danger by refusing to be the worlds policeman or mitigate it even further by bringing our sons and daughters, and our treasure as well, home from the god-forsaken deserts short-sighted politicians have marooned them in for far far too long?
Sen. Everett Dirksen (Ill.) once said “…a billion here a billion there…pretty soon you’re talking real money”. But there is more to it than simple economics. Even with $22+ trillion in debt looming ever larger, the US can certainly afford the best in military hardware and the defense budget isn’t what’s breaking the bank in my homeland.
But if you have 11 aircraft carriers, with a total deck space of over twice all other nations combined, one must find a mission for those sailors. And at $5+ billion each, plus the cost of the 80 jets on board ($30-$100 million each) it aught not be bombing mud huts.
Just some thoughts. Opinions?
P.S.
My families living comes from the DOD and I believe in peace through strength so please refrain from calling me a dope smoking hippie peacenik.

try to imagine what would become of the world if USA were to withdraw its military strength - this contraction of power would NOT leave a vacuum. Where USA no longer projected power there would be an immediate projection of power from Nations much worse than USA - think Russia and China...

Perhaps regionally. As was the case when we withdrew from Iraq. But neither Russia nor China pose a real military threat to the US. Certainly not at this point in time.
And would a 10-20% cut in yearly budget truly be a contraction in power? Might that 60-120 billion dollars be used to strengthen the US in other areas? Say our power grid or rail way systems?

@Boardwine Any contraction of power would provide opportunity for increased projection of power from both Russia and China and any other countries that might be eager to ally with them against USA.
About the only possible way for USA to make significant reduction in the military budget and to simultaneously maintain global status quo would be for our allies to pay their fair share toward their own global interests. Great Britain, and all of Western Europe, Canada, Mexico, all of South America, Australia and a few others come to mind as to who is not and has not paid their fair share of GNP toward the security of their own freedoms an independence...USA has been footing the bill ever since the end of WWII.
Projection of power (militarily) is the ONLY way to maintain our status and to ensure the relative freedoms we are accustomed to having. I am NOT willing to risk losing that in order to reallocate funds toward a new bullet train...

@iThink I completely agree with your position on our so called allies. Germany spends the lest amount on defense out of them all. But we've been the worlds policeman for 3 generations. it's time to stop.
I'm not advocating cutting military funding for some green deal pipe dream. What I am suggesting is that we could maintain our vast military advantage and still spend considerably less. If China is spending say $400 billion (of course 1/2 their R&D is stolen US property but that's another argument) and we cut ours back to $550 billion are we really jeopardizing our freedom? Or even our dominance?
