If anyone's following the pro-democracy protests, social media is saying the Chinese Army is massing south of Zhejiang. Later this week they'll be well positioned to enter Hong Kong.

Scary - why do you suppose China is moving on Hong Kong now. Does it have something to do with Chinas struggling economy?
Of course when they do take Hong Kong all of its wealth and commerce will be destroyed under the weight of a socialist/nationalist communist regime. Then Hong Kong will no longer be a "prize" for anyone.

The protesters have been careful not to lurch into violence, but they are not perfect. It’s only a matter of time until Beijing finds an excuse to crush them. Then the question will be whether and to what extent the international community reacts. I’m betting the US main stream media will remain dutifully silent.

There are 7 million people in Hong Kong, or about 0.2% of China's population. But Hong Kong produces 2.6% of China's GDP. Central authorities are well aware this is a "goose that lays golden eggs." Anything other than a soft takeover with a swift return to status quo could increase capital flight in an already slowing economy.
OTOH Xi Jinping is in the middle of a China-wide crackdown on dissent of any kind. He has to view democracy demonstrations in Hong Kong with a very jaundiced eye.
I am afraid Hong Kong is in the position of a mouse on a hippo's back.

Correct. And of course Hong Kong routinely tops the list of the most open and free markets in the world. That’s got to be a daily irritant to Xi.
I am only surprised that it took them this long. It has been almost inevitable for several weeks. The only thing that could stop it now would be for some of the largest financial players in HK to threaten to leave if China moves in. I believe this is the only leverage that could get China to modify its stance.

They might. I doubt it. This isn't Tienanmen square. Hong Kong is supposed to be "self governing" by treaty with the UK. The Chinese are often, and correctly, labeled heavy handed in suppressing dissent. But the are not often labeled short sighted and the current climate both politically and on the economic front makes it seem foolhardy at best to use the power of force at this time.
Maybe in selected areas. Say the airport for example. But overall they'll reassure the Hong Kong protesters everything will be fine and then quietly and quickly arrest the leaders after a few weeks
