Bigger question--and less satirical--is why people become fact-resistant.
It's not complicated. Science was politicized and willing to falsify research on an ideological basis. Statistics have been compiled in ways that justify lies or particular worldviews on an ideological basis. People use science and statistics as a weapon to bludgeon their opposition in the same way they weaponized terms like 'flat earthers, antivoxxers, climate change deniars, and on and on and on and on' embracing intimately the absolute worst of identity politics. Wildly ideological academia--higher education, and an indoctrinating public school system. FAKE NEWS, and the politically compromised mainstream media shunning anything resembling an industry ethic for ideology.
Those are easily enough reasons for reasonable people to mistrust the sincerity (and veracity) of information provided in the public sphere. In fact, it's the more reasonable position to take. Before this, it was wise to view information with skepticism. Now, it's a moral imperative.

New "Strain"? Try "Strains". You've got your flat earthers, antivaxxors, climate change deniers, commies, nazis, incels, pick up artists, the men's right activists, red pillers, alt-righters, MAGA hat wearers, holocaust deniers, people who confuse anti-israeli with anti-semetic, antisemites, christians, muslims, abortion supporters, and ultranationists (seriously, how does poland end up with nationalists. Their history is mostly Germans and Russians taking turns invading). Also hippies. Lastly, anyone who has a lot of money invested in an industry that is threatened by new technology.
