“My Name Is Billy Joe, and I Am an Addictive Thinker.”

Billy Joe’s story is typical of many. And his courageous struggle offers hope to those who feel trapped by their addiction, those who see no future for themselves but to wander hopelessly in an intellectually induced euphoria, staggering aimlessly from idea to idea, their only goal having something else to think. They pour over the Constitution and read Thomas Soul, Milton Freedman, and F. A. Hayak. This is no way to live. And as Billy Joe found help, so can all addictive thinkers.

Heavy thinking is a killer. And it starts with just one idea. But one idea leads to another and then another. Soon the victim’s mind is helplessly tangled in a dizzying web of propositions and inferences that day by day lead him relentlessly to the tragic brink of reasoning. Once this happens, the conclusion is imminent, unless the addictive thinker gets help.

But even with help, the road to recovery is not an easy one. Each day, the recovering thinker must struggle with his thoughts. He will know times when all he really seems to want is to think. And the slightest hint of a concept might trigger a relapse. Days latter, when he begins to realize fully what he has done, he might find himself sitting alone on a park bench—still thinking!

This, in fact, happened to Billy Joe. He had been forced to face his addiction problem after his employer discovered him secretly thinking on the job. He was fired immediately. Now realizing what his thinking had cost him, Billy Joe recognized that he had to regain control over his life. So he enrolled in Thinkers Anonymous, a program originally established by the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) as a training program for prospective representatives to its General Assembly. And Billy Joe made good progress through TA, reaching a full ninety days completely thought free. The training was so effective that even logical contradictions had ceased to bother him. Impressed by his recovery, his former employer actually promised to rehire him on the condition that Billy Joe would solemnly pledge to give up thinking altogether and to continue attending TA meetings.

But Billy threw away this supportive offer by making a single mistake. One day, just before he was to return to his former job, he accidentally ran into an old friend from his thinking days. Together they had spent many an evening utterly lost in thought.

His old thinking buddy knew Billy Joe’s weaknesses well. And he just scoffed at Billy, “You’ll always be a thinker,” he said, as he held out to him "The American State Papers" and "The Collected Works of John Locke." “I’ve got some of the best vintage thoughts here, and I’ll share with you. So come on, BJ. Let’s just sit here for awhile and think about old times.”

Billy took the bait. Soon he was on a thinking binge—thinking thoughts he had never thought before. A week later, he awoke at the door of the Democratic National Headquarters, feeling empty of ideas yet prodded forward by his relentless craving for them. Shamelessly, he again gave in to his addiction and tried to enter the building to find what he desperately needed—something to think.

Fortunately, though, the DNC was closed for the night. The doors were bolted and the security on. There were campaign flyers tossed on the ground, and Billy Joe found himself on his knees reading them. But they contained nothing that could satisfy his need for thought. Unable to control himself, he smashed a window to break into the building. Going through mounds of paper, files, and reports, Billy discovered to his horror that there was nothing in the DNC to think. Even the research library there contained only “bumper sticker” books, such as the best-seller, "Don’t Argue, Just Scream Bigot" and unread copies of Hillary’s "What Happened." The mindless atmosphere nauseated him, making it impossible to breathe.

For Billy, fortunately, all the good ideas in the Democratic Party had been thought by previous generations of Democrats and now lay forgotten in the distant past. The DNC had no record of these, so there was nothing there to feed his addiction. In the effort to recreate the Party’s image for the 21st century, the new generation of the organization had sworn off the dangerous habit of thought, an effort championed by 1Representative Pelosi, who advised passing legislation just to see what was in it and by AOC, who accused her critics of simply wanting to date her. Consequently, all the historic ideas of Roosevelt, Humphrey, Kennedy, and Stevenson had been moved to the shredder to make room for ideological junk food, such as the notions that defunding the police will make us safer and that inflation is good for the economy. So Billy’s act of vandalism had proved useless; he would find no new ideas there. In fact, he would find no ideas at all. Standing alone in that building with the alarm blaring, Billy Joe realized that he had finally reached bottom. He had completely run out of things to think.

He was grateful when the police arrested him. It gave him a chance to come to himself, to recognize his self-destructive behavior. He had to do something to fight the thoughts that were controlling his life. The Democrat DA refused to prosecute him, and he was released without bond in just a few hours. But Billy understood instinctively what he had to do. He called his TA sponsor. He didn’t even think about it. He just found the courage to do it. And he got the help he needed. As therapy, he began working as a volunteer on Joe Biden’s presidential campaign where there would be no thinking at all. That was many months ago. Since then, he has continued his “thought-free” recovery successfully. Today, Billy Joe doesn’t have the faintest idea. He thinks that AOC is an intellectual giant, has become a member of ANTIFA, and will vote the Democratic ticket come November. He is living proof that addictive thinking can be beaten.
