Jews have always been used by the powerful. Having been barred from other means of economic life by the Catholic Church they slipped into what were considered at the time sinful ways of making money for Christians such as banking. It turned out this was advantageous to the nobility. The nobility could hold over the heads of Jewish money lenders the fact they were outsiders in their own societies. Groups such as the Knights Templar were a threat as they gained too much political power as bankers and had to be completely destroyed. If the Jewish bankers got too powerful you could just call up another pogrom.

From a cultural evolutionary perspective it isn't much different than the Irish experience in America. The Irish had a strong sense of group Identity both culturally and in religion. They followed a religion that had a history of always being a thorn in the sides of the establishment protestants. Considering the history there was good reason to suspect they couldn't be integrated. So they were marginalized and had difficulty making a living. Unlike the Jews however they were poorly educated. Instead of taking an intellectual route to escape oppression they used their numbers to build political machines. Eventually taking over major cities from New York to Chicago. To some degree the Irish descendants are still over represented in politics just as the Jews are in intellectual fields.

There are also some similarities between blacks and the Irish. Because of the vicissitudes of history blacks have disproportionate political power. When whites abandoned the cities they gave away political control.

Marginalizing people has unintended consequences. A lot of times detrimental to society.
