Its amazing how through the main stream propaganda outlets and social media you can turn the whole world on its ear with misinformation. People just gladly hop on the hype train without even looking to see if there is any data to backup any of it up. It almost seems we can't make it from day to day if there isnt something new to be outraged over.

*In his opening remarks at the March 3 media briefing on Covid-19, WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated:
“Globally, about 3.4% of reported COVID-19 cases have died. By comparison, seasonal flu generally kills far fewer than 1% of those infected.”
Initial estimate was 2%
Initially, the World Health Organization (WHO) had mentioned 2% as a mortality rate estimate in a press conference on Wednesday, January 29 and again on February 10. However, on January 29 WHO specified that this was a very early and provisional estimate that might have changed. Surveillance was increasing, within China but also globally, but at the time it was said that:
We don't know how many were infected ("When you look at how many people have died, you need to look at how many people where infected, and right now we don't know that number. So it is early to put a percentage on that.".
The only number currently known is how many people have died out of those who have been reported to the WHO.*

In the early stages of a pandemic, once people start dying, the mortality rate rises. As it draws to a close, the mortality rate falls. According to Worldometer, the global mortality rate (only accounting for known closed cases), is, as of July 12, 2020, 7.01% and falling.
I get the impression that WHO believes the rate of asymptomatic cases to be higher than for the flu. If that is true, the official mortality rates will naturally be at least somewhat higher for COVID-19, unless the actual mortality rates are significantly lower.
We can't know the true mortality rate until the pandemic is over, but it is looking like the official one will be significantly lower than 7.01% Of course, the actual mortality rate will be lower still. We will have to see if it eventually goes as low as the flu in terms of official statistics.
