Individuals, not groups

When I started work at Shell (Equilon which was essentially Shell), they held meetings about “diversity” where they preached their twisted view of humanity. The basic doctrine is that none of us are individuals and none of us see one another as individuals. Instead, we are just collections of demographic groups. By this doctrine, I’m not “Bill Kelly, a unique and individual person.” Instead, I’m “Bill Kelly – male, white, single, engineer (now disabled), obese, homeowner, pet snake owner, Republican, failed Christian, etc..” According to this doctrine, all of human relationships are about being members of dominant and subordinate groups and that everything should be about equalizing these groups. According to this doctrine, no one sees one another as individuals, and the only people who speak of seeing one another as individuals are powerful white males trying to maintain dominance. This doctrine is evil, and Shell should be ashamed of having promoted this evil.

A few days ago, I ran across another failure to distinguish between the individual and the group. The meme was just text and was trying to make a case for the “black lives matter” slogan. The idea was that if a man’s wife comes to him and asks whether he loves her, his replying that “I love everybody” is cruel because it implies that she’s not special to him. The meme tries to defend the “black lives matter” slogan as being the same situation.

That mindset is what’s wrong with where our society is. A husband and wife are supposed to have a unique relationship. They are supposed to love one another in a way that is beyond how they love everyone else. When a husband says “I love you” to his wife, he is elevating her above all others because he should elevate her above all others. That’s simply not true of any group and particularly not true of any racial or ethnic group. We don’t owe any racial group a status above all others. That mindset is racism, and no excuse makes that mindset any less racist or any less ugly.

Neither blacks nor whites nor any other demographic group that one can imagine is monolithic. To view any group as monolithic is racist or whatever “ist” word applies regarding that demographic group. Within every group are many people, and they are all different. Some of them live good lives that really matter. While every human life matters in a basic sense, not everyone makes his or her life matter.

When the Carr brothers were perpetrating the Wichita Horror of the 90’s, their lives didn’t matter. For those who aren’t familiar with this black on white multiple murder, the Carr brothers were a pair of worthless trash who broke into an apartment where two couples were enjoying a quiet evening together. They raped and beat these four people. They tied three of them in a closet and took the other one to withdraw from ATMs. They then took the four of them to a snowy field where they stripped them in the snow and shot them in the head. They were caught because one victim survived the gunshot and ran naked through the snow and cold wind to get help. The lives of the Carr brothers don’t matter. I wish that they had been executed. If they have been released from prison, I hope that they are dead.

The same is true of the men who killed James Byrd by dragging him to death behind a truck. In the Byrd case, the killers were white and the victim was black. Either way, the lives of the killers don’t matter. I mention the case in Wichita first because that case never received the publicity that the Byrd case did. I think at least one of those murderers has been executed. Either way, the world would be a better place without these killers.

Saying “All lives matter” is not cruel to black people. No race or other demographic deserves to be raised above any other. Those who demand that kind of elevation are racists. I’m sorry that liars and con artists have tried to tell blacks that they are a subordinate and need to be raised up, but I won’t live or speak as if that lie is the truth. Likewise, I won’t speak or live as if any should be held up by anyone in the way that spouses should hold up one another.

This is not a pro-Black movement.
It's an anti-America movement, and a broader attack on Freedom in general; see London, Paris, etc...
The very premise of America and Western Civilization is Individualism; the argument for basic human rights.
The people funding and manipulating BLM are collectivists, which is of course the antithesis of individualism. They don't care for a moment who you are, only what you are; that's where the power lies: in numbers.
The individual is entirely irrelevant and expendable to the imaginary "greater good" of the Herd, which is just an excuse to assume more power to control the Herd.
The bad news is: Collectivism and Individualism cannot "coexist" in a single coherent society.
There is no Common Ground, they are mutually exclusive.
They're trying to "exclude" each other right now, in the streets.
And if real Americans don't wipe the sand out of their eyes and get actively engaged, they will inevitably be the ones who are excluded; at the cost of Freedom for all of humanity for the foreseeable future.
Freedom didn't come easy, and will be even harder to get back a second time.

Be aware, speak up, and vote like your way of life depends on it; because it does.

My dad worked for Equilon as a field gauger out of Bakersfield in the 90s.

when my son enter the military at age 19 i remember him telling me one thing that stuck. they are trained never to think as individuals as they belong to a group and each is responsible to protect their other members. i have always been an individual because i am strong willed but i see the importance of belonging to a group. no man is an island.

The military is a different situation. They put aside their individuality during their to function most efficiently. I was never in the military, but I've done some fire training. I realize that in some functions, people have to put aside individuality and follow their leaders' orders. I understand that police officers have to do the same thing sometimes. That's a completely different issue from how we see people in society as a whole. Imposing that kind of definition on different demographic groups is still wrong.

I understand what you're saying here, sympathize and agree; but I would add the reminder that it is not the individual but the group that builds cultures and civilizations and no one individual can singlehandedly save ours culture or our civilization. The increasing mediocrity of everything is sucking the life out of our world.

I think you are right, that "no one individual can single-handedly save our culture or our civilization"
It is the unfettered actions of individuals, each pursuing their own interests, that will save our civilization.
Indeed, that is our civilization. But we're quite fettered at present... that's the first thing we need to fix.

A group never accomplished anything.
It is obviously the individuals in the group that do all the accomplishing. And only a small percentage of them at that, according to the Pareto principle.

The question is how should the group of individuals organize themselves.
Top-down: centralizes control (tyranny), obliterates efficiency, and supplants individual goals with nebulous self-serving vision of the "common good", projected by those who have assumed the control structure.
Bottom-up: distributes control (liberty), optimizes efficiency in real-time at the level of engagement because that's where decisions are both made and enacted. And, it preserves individual goals even as it leverages them toward the aggregate... the actual... common good.

Or... how does this sound:
In a collective, the individual's goals are subordinated to those of the group... as determined by those who purport to speak for the group, as a function of power and position.
In a free society, the individuals' goals are the goals of the group; insofar as they align with, and don't unjustly impede, each other.

@rway Actually I didn't have in mind a collective in which anyone's goals are subordinated to those of the group, but rather a group with a transcendent kind of goal that might entice individuals to decide that it was worth their while to join in the effort to achieve it. Transcendent goals are things like peace, harmony, and cooperation between divergent peoples. Though they may be largely unachievable, the belief in the worthiness of them and the efforts to achieve them are the things that build and further a culture or civilization. I think what we are seeing today is the unravelling of the belief in the worthiness of the goal and I think it has resulted from self-indulgent individualism which has laid itself open to being coopted by the collective politics of envy. I think in a truly free society no one could be empowered by envy.
