The muses for their work are the suffering and heartbreak that is part of living itself. These performers are locked into a stream of consciousness that is exclusively attuned to the bad shit that goes on everywhere all the time.
Popular musics niche is the one thing that all people hold in common - that being an innate sense of having been treated unfairly and unjustly; having been dealt a bad hand as it were. Everyman suffers to some degree at various intervals through the living experience.
Musicians songwriters singers produce wonderful sounds and use lyrics that appeal universally. Personally I don't care what Roger Waters thinks about Israels right to exist. I would never have bought his music anyhow.
Obviously Waters thinks of himself as a virtuous man - he thinks his song is righteous...well, none of that is of any consequence really. He's old - he is posing as his time here on earth winds down.
