I'm going with the former.

to do "whatever one wants" is NOT a Right - not by any interpretation or stretch of the "Law". True enough if an individual wants to throw himself off a bridge or he wants to commit suicide by cop or if he wants to drink 50 pints of beer in a single sitting they can do that. It's a matter of free will. It is NOT a matter of "Rights".
What this girl did was explicitly illegal. Thankfully she paid for it with her own life. Tragically she seriously injured innocent people in the exercise of her "free will".
Her family, parents should have to foot the costs of treatment and care for the people she injured - THEY have a Right to expect that much. If not a legal right then certainly a moral right.

@iThink I stand corrected; of course she didn't have the "right," but in this day and age particularly among so many of this girl's age group who have received no education in critical thinking, there is the misapprehension that having the ability, the will and inclination to do a thing automatically confers the right to do it. What I was actually emphasizing (and not very well) was not rights but freedom; the freedom to do a thing because one has the unfettered power, though murderous/suicidal it may be. My post certainly was not intended to defend or justify her actions. My intention was to mock the
anonymous person who said she had the right. I just did a poor job.

@Geofrank thanks for clearing it up - although I suspected that was the case IMHO the word "Rights" is tossed about with abandon. Do people really have a "right" to not be offended? Do they have a "right" to be free of consequences of their own poor judgment or laziness? Do people have a "right" to be unafraid...the answer to those rhetorical questions is obviously NO! No no and HELL NO.
Sorry for being too critical of your use of the word "rights" but I think it is more important now than ever before that we keep a close rein on the concept of "Rights".

@iThink There is no reason to be sorry for being critical. Reasoned and civil critique should be foundational to Slug. I welcome it even if it stings the ego a bit. No pain no gain. I've been wrong enough in my life that I'm not overly afraid of it. If I can keep my mind open I invariably learn from making mistakes.
I'm not a brilliant thinker but every now and then I feel like I have to float an idea or opinion to see if it will indeed float..and how and why it does or doesn't.
Willfully screwing up on purpose, though, is a kind of stupidity reminiscent of Johnny Knoxville's Jackass TV show. It can be funny but stupid and no longer funny when others are drawn into the stupidity whether willingly or unawares as in the tragic case of this jackass girl.

@Geofrank well thank you...I am not a brilliant thinker - not particularly bright - I just have an impulse to wade through BS in order to get to an objective perspective on whatever subject matter is presented. The exhortation "...And the truth shall set you free!" rings profoundly wise and true in my mind.
