Someone needs to ask when railroads were allowed to reduce their train crews by one man and dispense with the cabooses before aspersions are cast on the Trump Administration for doing it.
With this one brilliant idea train observation, was literally cut in half, because while the engineer and the brakeman kept watch on train conditions as far as they could see respectively the conductor and flagman were doing the same from their respective sides of the now extinct caboose.
When the flagman position was dispensed with along with the venerable old caboose both deemed superfluous after all their time in service – service long before the advent of hot-box detectors.
I think you’ll find that Trump had absolutely nothing to do with the above transportation deregulation that allowed this ignorance to flourish.
In addition, hot-box detectors need to be mandated at close intervals, although it would be better were there a conductor and flagman on a caboose to read them out and act on information immediately. POINT OF INFORMATION: Hot box detectors count the number of wheels that pass it ahead of any hot-box they detect. With a full crew short work could be made of setting the offending car off on a siding – unlike East Palistine.
PS1. I’ll say it again, you’re not going to find the above regulation change on the Trump Administration’s watch – so whose was it?
PS2. I’d suggest hot-box detectors at least at 20 mile intervals with visual readouts that a conductor or flagman can observe. And for Pete’s sake put that flagman and caboose back on trains – they’ve been there all these many years for reason you know.
