LINK Atheist to Send Texas Schools 'In God We Trust' Signs Written in Arabic

A state law in Texas, passed in 2021 but getting renewed focus in the new school year, requires public schools to display “In God We Trust” posters as long as they’re donated or paid for by outside groups (no taxpayer money involved) and as long as they fulfill the law’s requirements.

Conservative Christians are already taking advantage of the situation, offering dozens of posters to school districts in various counties. This is simply the latest effort by conservatives in power to shove God in students’ faces.

The most frustrating thing about S.B. 797 was how it attempted to prevent any shenanigans. There seemed to be no way to make a bigger point about religious freedom and the need for church/state separation. In Kentucky, for example, a similar law a few years ago led one school to display a framed copy of the back of a dollar bill; another school (named after Abraham Lincoln) posted a picture of a penny.

Texas’ law was designed to prevent that kind of liberal creativity.

The law said the words “In God We Trust” had to be on the poster. The U.S. flag had to appear directly underneath those words, in the center. An image of the Texas flag also had to be on there. Most importantly, the signs could “not depict any words, images, or other information” beyond what was already specified. That last clause would knock out both of those Kentucky posters.

Enter Chaz Stevens, a Florida activist known for his provocative stunts. Stevens most recently pushed for the Bible to be banned in Florida schools for the very same reasons conservative Christians were giving to ban other books. In the past, he also erected Festivus poles in the Florida Capitol to counter Nativity scenes.

The law never said “In God We Trust” had to be in English.

It’s the “Air Bud” rule applied to church/state separation.

So the Atheist from Florida created a version of the poster with “In God We Trust” written in Arabic in order to send them to Texas schools. “I followed their ridiculous law, both in spirit and intent.”

The signs will inevitably make some conservative Christians queasy.

The obvious question is: Will it work? Will schools accept these donated posters? The truth is they don’t have a choice in the matter. If the posters are donated and meet the legal specifications, they must go up. The schools would be violating the law by rejecting his offer.

Even if Texas Republicans insist the English-language version of the poster was implied, that’s not what the law says. And if there’s one thing we know about conservatives, it’s that they’re huge fans of strict constructionism. We shouldn’t assume anything that’s not literally written into the law.

it says "We Trust in Allah"

You can distinguish the difference between allah and ela. That's why Arabic translations of the Torah and the bible are bunk.

@eschatologyguy “There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is the messenger of Allah.” Shahada

"Allah" was the name of a moon goddess in pre-Islamic Arabic mythology, the implication being that "Allah" as the term for god in Islam implies that Muslims worship a different deity than the Judeo-Christian one.

Muhammad thus attempted to have it both ways. To the pagans, he said that he still believed in the Moon-god Allah. To the Jews and the Christians, he said that Allah was their god too. But both the Jews and the Christians knew better and that is why they rejected his god Allah as a false god.

Interestingly, in countries like the UK and Nordic countries, once freedom of religion became protected by law, they became a lot more secular. Protecting freedom of religion by law means that no one religion shall be superior to another, and no religion shall interfere with governmental decision-making. Religious beliefs are therefore suppressed to the individual level by law. This is despite the fact that those secular countries still have their official religions, typically Christianity. This is what the US should have, I think.

Have you given serious thought to moving back to China? Maybe a free country is not your thing. A nice little apartment in Beijing where you are told what to do, where to go, when you can do it and who you can do it with.

I am sorry things never worked out for you in a free country. I am sure things will improve when you are back in your element again

Back to China? Sorry, never been.

Do you think a free country forces schools to display religious messages to captive audiences? How is allowing an Arabic sign not a free country thing? Maybe you are the one who needs to move.

@JacksonNought

You behave as if hanging a monotheistic sign in a school will cause widespread death and destruction. Do you think a free country forces gender dysphoria and LGBTQ+ rights onto captive audiences regardless of their religious or cultural beliefs?

When I was in school, we had queer kids too. We knew who they were and no one bothered them very much. They were not threatened or harassed. Live and let live was our motto.

Today you want a forced takeover of queer rights over the rights and beliefs of the majority. There is your HUGE miscalculation

@Sensrhim4hizvewz do you think hanging said monotheistic sign in a different language will cause widespread death and destruction?

Also based on the history of the USA, and your pattern on this website, I do not believe for a second that you never threatened or harassed queer kids in school.

@JacksonNought

Doing something like this is intended to provoke and anger. Put it into the language the people use and understand and there is no problem. You don't understand this?

@JacksonNought

One of my best friends in HS was gay. He was also one of the toughest scrappers around and you didn't mess with him...besides, he was a good guy. We all knew why he never dated girls. In his first year university, he came out officially and joined an organization on campus that brought together other gays.

I was taught that a minority has no right to inflict their ways onto the majority, however the majority has an obligation to "accommodate" minorities where necessary

@Sensrhim4hizvewz adding a sign with a clear religious message to a school, with the clear intent to inject Christian dogma onto a captive audience, is intended to provoke and anger.

What do you have against different languages?

@JacksonNought

Now you are getting ridiculous. "In God we trust" is Christian indoctrination? Only Christians believe in God? Muslims don't? Jews don't? You are a citizen in a country that was founded on Christian values and faith. Are you OK with Israel being a religious state for Jews only??? Are you really OK with that? Why do they get to have their own religion without @JacksonNaught accusing them of indoctrinating their people? Why doesn't @JacksonNaught go after Israel for their apartheid system of government? Israel allegedly worships the same God Christians do.

There is nothing wrong with another language, provided that language is applicable in use and is not being used to incite. Stop the nonsense. It is not OK to start fights. You know and I know exactly what is being meant.

@Sensrhim4hizvewz if the sign is also for Jews and Muslims, and not just Christians, then you should have no problem with the sign being displayed in Hebrew or Arabic, isn't that so? Maybe it could even say Allah instead of God?

"a country that was founded on Christian values and faith" - that isn't true.

"Are you OK with Israel being a religious state for Jews only???" - no, I am not. I don't support ethnostates or theocracies. I am very vocal against the genocide and apartheid of Israel.

"There is nothing wrong with another language" - good, then the Arabic sign should be allowed, and under the current law, must be displayed by Texas schools if donated. Seems to go against your original comments that the mere idea of displaying this is something a "free country" wouldn't do and will cause widespread death and destruction.

@JacksonNought

So if you have 3.8% of a school that may possibly understand Arabic, why would you not also post a sign beside it in English for the other 96.2%? Otherwise you're just picking a fight

@Sensrhim4hizvewz who said anything about not posting another sign beside it? You are the one who seems to want to exclude signs. The law states a school has to accept the sign if dontated. Go ahead and donate in every language you want. "In Allah We Trust" sounds like a good addition.
