There is one thing even the members of the two main tribes which are locked in a fierce culture war can agree on. It's not a topic or opinion they have in common, but an attitude: "Don't mess with our identity!"
The hostilities begin as soon as they start to define their "identities".
Most of us today are not citizens any more, we are members of identity groups.

Imagine an Irishman that's spent a lifetime in Irish bars, and he knows Irish style. Furthermore, imagine that he's charming and a good drinking companion. He harnessed the identity to create style.
There's no reason why someone from Japan couldn't become an Irish-style drinking companion. After all, Eminem became a respected rapper.
It's not about identity. It's about how well you harness it.
There are lots of people that are big on identity and have no style. What a waste.
I'm a proud cheesehead, and I wield cheesehead style.
If Trump attends a Green Bay Packers game, he doesn't need a cheesehead hat.

The religious calls me an atheist.
The atheists call me a believer.
They call me pro-gay and anti-gay, capitalist and socialist, etc etc,.
I am none of those things.
I am an individual and there is no one like me.

I’ve always admired the American system as the only one in history to specifically assert that the rights of the individual are not granted by any government. The idea that a benevolent government grants and even guarantees “rights” is an argument for an ever expanding unelected bureaucracy, the very swamp that Donald Trump tried to drain.
We’ve seen in Canada this past year, that without the guarantees of the US constitution, “rights” can be quickly and arbitrarily stripped from citizens who displease the governing elite.
@Matias66 for sure. It’s possible a strongman, or a mob could hijack democracy. It could be the Jan 6th crew, or more likely woke progressives who have a death grip the thinking of major academic, corporate and cultural institutions. That doesn’t change for me, the idea that America is exceptional, and it’s constitution has worked to the good for almost three centuries.
On a broader scale, the majority today, including sadly, many US leaders, reject the idea of American exceptionalism, especially around the constitution. I am not a part of that majority.
The American experiment worked so well, for so long, because the founders, drawing from the roots of Christianity and the English Enlightenment, baked into the constitution a respect for the sovereignty of the individual.
Douglas Murray says that intersectional identity, if pursued to its end point, is always individuality. The idea of an individual, with inherent rights, is exactly what leftists, progressives and postmodernists are working night and day to extinguish.

I disagree: intersectional identity is always group identity. You are X and have certain rights, because you are member of a certain group (Black, gay, trans etc...)
What did the founding fathers say in the constitution about the rights of a transwomen like Lia Thomas to compete against other women? Is the free choice of competition an unalienable right?
